Chapter 2: Design in Practice-Kitchen Details
Well-designed cabinets are the key to successful kitchen planning, but it is the attention given to detail that brings a touch of individuality. When choosing your fittings, remember simple ideas are often the best, and opt for functional features that will match your needs and stand up to constant use. Start by taking a critical look at your overall kitchen layout to pinpoint areas that do not work effectively or are too cluttered. Aim to utilize areas of "dead space", such as the gap between the end of a run of kitchen units and the wall. The addition of shelving or a storage trolley will quickly add extra storage space in awkward areas. Many problems lie within the kitchen cabinets themselves, so consider how the internal space is organized and whether it suits your storage needs. The addition of racks, dividers, and hooks may provide better visibility and access to items.
The door fronts of wall and base cabinets are often the most dominant feature in a kitchen with the color, surface finish, and modern or traditional design influencing your choice of accessories. With a little imagination, cabinet doors are easy to update simply by repainting the solid door fronts, or removing the central panel and replacing it with chickenwire, punched meal or fabric, and fitting new door handles.
Although it is advisable to keep food preparation worktops clear, kitchens can look austere if they re devoid of all personal touches. Consider small details that will personalize that much-used room, such as a favorite collection of china or glassware, or a pinboard filled with children's paintings or postcards form friends.
