Overview

Now that bluegrass is finally an above-ground phenomenon in our country, thanks to the runaway success of the Grammy-winning O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, the time is surely right for an introduction to the greats of the genre. And that’s just what you get with this well-chosen two-disc overview. Mingling the very fathers of the “high lonesome sound” ( Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley ), the practitioners who followed in their footsteps (Earl Scruggs, the Osborne Brothers, Del McCoury), and today’s bluegrass artists (Ricky Skaggs, J D Crowe and the New South, Union Station), Treasury presents a focused, well-rounded, and eminently enjoyable portrait of this most American of musics. There’s plenty of wonderful picking and singing, and enough classic songs to start a full-fledged bluegrass obsession.
