Time on Earth

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Cellist Ron Clearfield mixes many tantalizing strains -- world music, Latin plainsong, spiritual effervescence, victory anthem -- in this classically grounded album. Clearfield covers all the cello's bases, going way beyond the ordinary "mellow cello": gentle, resonant plucking on the Spanish lullaby "Nana," intriguing multi-track harmonies, fiery full-range arpeggios on "Étude de Lumière," and clear-as-a-bell tone on the airy "Dancer in the Light." Even the highest notes of his 1717 Claude Pierray cello are lyrical, never sounding stressed or forced. Clearfield, principal cellist of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, is joined by a number of live guest artists: Jennifer...

Even the highest notes of his 1717 Claude Pierray cello are lyrical, never sounding stressed or forced. Clearfield, principal cellist of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, is joined by a number of live guest artists: Jennifer Hart Merrill on french horn for the title track and the triumphant "The Journey"; harpists Lelia Lattimore and Valerie VonPechy Witcup on "Dancer in the Light"; Jeanne Tarrant, flute and piccolo, and John Dee, oboe, on the magically atmospheric "Rainforest Rain"; and Jomo Faulks playing mbira thumb piano and bass on the jaunty "Banqti." The album begins on a reverential note with the title track, a chant to "living in love" sung by Jeff Konz, and it ends with Clearfield conducting the New Leicester Chamber Orchestra in the rousing finale, "The Journey." Time on Earth is a heart-provoking, feel-good album that you'll want to relish again and again.
All Music Guide - Campbell
On his fifth solo effort Time on Earth, Ron Clearfield continues to combine the distinctive blend of new age spirituality with contemporary classical. Clearfield's cello is navigated through an ensemble tapestry encompassing keyboards, oboe, zither, flute, harp, and piccolo underscored by the vocals of Jeff Konz with poetry recitation by David Sinensky and Margarite Westo.
