Overview

Discovering Alabama producer Roger Reid, author of acclaimed YA novels Longleaf and Space, continues the saga of teenage sleuth Jason Caldwell in his new mystery adventure, Time. Set at the Steven C. Minkin Paleozoic Footprint Site in north Alabama -- the richest source of vertebrate trackways of its age in the world -- Time is a fast-moving story that incorporates factual information about geology and paleontology into its intriguing tale of suspicion and pursuit. This witty and educational book will captivate middle-school readers of all ages. In Time, Jason is reunited with his friend Leah from Longleaf, with whom he again solves a mystery and survives danger. Leah is as smart and plucky a tomboy as ever, but Jason can’t help noticing this time that she’s also an attractive girl. Are they friends or boy-girl friends? They aren’t sure, but readers will recognize a teen romance even if the principals don’t. The engaging story combines intelligence, courage, and insight with scientific facts and exciting adventure.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Mark Letcher
Jack Caldwell, the hero and teen sleuth of two previous Reid novels, Longleaf (Junebug, 2007) and Space (Junebug, 2008), returns to Alabama for yet another adventure. Jack's friend, Leah, convinces him to visit her and assist the Alabama Paleontology Society with a fossil dig. Before embarking on the dig, the friends become aware that Carl Morris, a criminal they had once helped put in custody, has escaped. This makes Jack hesitant to return to Alabama, but he relents, out of natural curiosity and a desire to see Leah again. Once at the dig site, Jack and Leah learn that someone has been stealing valuable fossils, and it falls to them to help catch the thief. They may find more than they bargained for, though, especially when an old nemesis makes an appearance. This quick, entertaining read offers not only an engaging mystery, but also a great amount of information about fossils, digs, and the natural wonders of Alabama. This information may drag for some, but Reid moves the story along quickly. Readers will also appreciate how Reid treats the emerging relationship between Jack and Leah with humor and skill. Even though the main characters have been featured in earlier novels, Reid offers enough background for a new reader to pick up on events and relationships without having to turn first to the earlier novels. Once reading this one, however, many readers will want to pick up Reid's other Jack Caldwell mysteries, to explore his previous cases. Reviewer: Mark Letcher
