Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Thirty-two pages of text accompany this box, which contains a sundial with latitude cards and an hourglass. "All living things follow the rhythms of earth and the sky." Beginning with the solar system and the seasons, this discussion of time is illustrated with medieval manuscripts and Egyptian paintings. Monuments to the sun include both Stonehenge and the largest sundial in Jaipur, India. Old calendars, early water clocks and a discussion of how hourglasses were used before the 19th century to estimate the speed of ships are among the interesting facts presented in this book. The sundial included is not the sturdiest of devices, but a hands-on-project always seems to generate interest and interactive learning experiences can make a real impression.
