Cute, but a bit too campy.
This is the first book I've read by Katie MacAlister. I'm not sure if this is her usual style, but if so I imagine you can't read too many of her books in a row due to excessive campiness.
While I found Kiya's personality bubbly and for the most part likable, she really wears you down. It's hard to keep up with her energy and constant ramblings. The references to her foster mom and her id, ego and superego were a bit repetitive as well. Overall she was fun, but exhausting as a character and I found myself wanting to take a break from her ridiculousness after a bit. Her general acceptance of the supernatural, lack of concern for her own affairs and runaway mouth didn't strike me as believable for a 32 year old either. Her lack of forethought also made her seem a bit stupid at times.
Peter was interesting at first, but sort of lost a bit of points in his failure to reign in Kiya and her antics. While their banter was comical and they complemented each other, I didn't feel like they really brought out any betterness in each other as a couple per se. It was more so about their sense of humor jiving and their need to quench a loneliness (which, on Kiya's end, we didn't really read about until much later).
It's a decent book, but the campiness is too much and detracts from what could've been an interesting mystery story line. The sex scenes could benefit from a bit more steam too and less fumbling around.

The first time I started writing this review I found myself going on more about the nit pickers than the actual book so I started over. All I'm going to say about them is a lot of the time I look at the rest of their reviews and they rate almost everything poorly. I don't know what their deal is, but I'm done with trying to to figure them out.
I enjoyed Time Thief very much and I would recommend it to anyone I know. One of the best parts about Katie's characters is that they're realistic and have faults. Ironically, that's one of the biggest reasons why nit pickers complain, but I think it's great. Who wants to read about unrealistically perfect people who always get everything right? I know I don't. All of the characters in Time Thief have this quality. I really liked the concept of Travellers and the interesting abilities they have. Katie created a nice change of pace by introducing the Travellers to the Otherworld, but still maintained familiarity by keeping elements that have been found in some of her other books.
I don't want to give anything away by saying too much, but I thought the story was strong and realistic. It still had Katie's usual injections of humor, of course, which made me laugh as much as her previous books. I know I'll read this book again and again, and I'm looking forward to The Art of Stealing Time. I think this series is going to develop into one of the best she's ever created. If you really do read for fun (instead of doing it so you can look smart or something along those lines), enjoy paranormal romance, like strong female characters, appreciate unique stories, and have a good sense of humor then you should enjoy this book a lot.

It was ANNOYING!!!
I enjoy laugh-out-loud books but this is a bit TOO MUCH; to a point where the characters (esp. the heroine) can't seem to make any coherent conversations because of the 'humor' injected in every sentence. It makes the characters look stupid and immature for their age.
I picked this one up because I was excited about the premise of the book. But my excitement turned into annoyance as I continued reading it. The funny thing is, I actually liked the last chapter of the book, towards the end because it felt like, for once, they were able to get serious about what was really going on. If only there was a BALANCE of humor and the subject at hand, I could have enjoyed this book more.
This is my first book by the author. I want to say that it's also going to be my last but I might give her other books a try. ;)

I love katie as an author. That being said, I found this one good but a bit rediculous. Peter is a cop but he doesn't seem to be a good one. Kaiya is immature and flakey for her age. I believe this new series has great potential. I look forward to Gregory's story and hopefully Dalton as well.
I am familiar with the location of this novel. Crater Lake, Umpqua River and the dozens of waterfalls are amazing beauties of nature seen in Oregon.

I enjoyed this book. It was a fun read with some great romance. You can't help but to fall in love with the main characters, Peter and Kiya.

3.5 stars fun and romantic: REVIEW: TIME THIEF is the first installment in Katie McAlister’s new contemporary paranormal series focusing on a group of supernatural beings known as Travellers. Travellers are likened to gypsies and have a difficult time acclimating themselves into the human world due to their outdated belief systems, prejudices and self-governing bodies. Time Thief reveals some of the history and lore, familial ties and, discriminating prejudices between the human world, the half-breeds and the Travellers. Travellers have the ability to ‘steal or borrow time’ from humans and others, but must repay or otherwise suffer the consequences.
Katie McAlister has written Time Thief with her usual dose of humor allowing her heroine Kiya Mortenson’s banter with Peter Faa to carry most of the storyline from start to finish. This couple’s interaction and verbal one on one is like watching a comedian on speed. You cannot help but smile as Peter shakes his head at Kiya’s antics and need to defend the man with whom she is falling in love-even Kiya’s internal dialogue is humorous and fun to read. But there were times when Kiya’s continuous need to talk would place Peter and she in danger-there were times when she needed to edit her verbage.
Peter and Kiya’s attraction to one another is immediate and the life that Peter once knew will be turned upside down by the small female who wields a powerful pull. There is a connection that cannot be denied. Kiya’s presence will both aid and threaten Peter’s life when the people he is investigating use Kiya as bait. Not only is Kiya’s life in danger, but everyone connected to Peter as well.
TIME THIEF is a well written, introductory storyline that outlines the premise of the Traveller series. The characters are colorful and their personalities drive the story. Kiya’s almost hyper rantings will leave you breathless as you find yourself reading at a frantic pace to keep up with her dialogue and internal debates. Congratulations to Katie McAlister on Time Thief and the Traveller series.
