Overview

There's a flock of parrots in Zoe's backyard! No one knows where they came from, but they aren't as big a surprise as the sight of Zoe's mother, who has just arrived from California. She wants Zoe to move back home with her-something Zoe has been waiting to hear for months. But why does leaving Ambler and Dr. Mac's place seem so much harder than she expected?

Just when Zoe is starting to feel at home in Ambler, Pennsylvania, living with her veterinarian grandmother and learning about a flock of wild parrots, her actress mother arrives to take her to a new home in Los Angeles.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Zoe Hopkins makes some big decisions in the face of stressful challenges in her young life. For nearly a year she has lived with her grandmother, who runs Wild at Heart, a veterinary clinic in Ambler, Pennsylvania. During that time she has learned to cope with separation from her mother, who is trying to get a Hollywood career off the ground. But when her mother suddenly arrives at the clinic and announces that she is taking Zoe to California, it's all too much for the girl, who has just settled in with her cousin, new friends, a pet dog named Sneakers, and her Gran. What's more, she has discovered a cause—looking out for a flock of escaped parrots, most of which were smuggled into the U.S. and one of which was someone's pet. Being torn between her now rewarding life in Ambler and a new life with her mother, who seemingly abandoned her for a year, is very upsetting. But Zoe solves the problem in a way that shows she is on the brink of adulthood. Preteens should find the book both entertaining and educational. They will learn all about parrots (book includes a "news clipping" about parrots) as well as how to make wise choices when faced with tough situations. This is the last in the "Wild at Heart" series, which centers its stories in Gran's vet clinic that is home to a number of preteen volunteers. 2003 (orig. 2002), American Girl/Gareth Stevens Publishing,

    Amazing Time to Fly

Laurie Halse Anderson's Time to Fly is a very amazing story. It takes you through a wonderful adventure, with David, Brenna, Suntina, Zoe, and Maggie, learning about and helping parrots all the way. The book is mainly focused on Zoe, Whose life is turning somewhat upside down during this particular book. She finds a flock of wild parrots in her back yard, and discovers that they are living right there in Ambler, Pennsylvania. One, 'E.T.' can talk, and is called E.T. because he can say 'phone home'. Zoe is totally obsessed with the parrots, trying to help Ambler folks learn about them, to help them survive. Meanwhile, her mom, away for almost a year, now wants Zoe to come live with her. All in all, I enjoyed this book immensely!
