With the help of his fiancée, aviatrix Linka Perflinger, talented pet ladybug, Terfle, and a rebellious teenage squirrel named Twigg, Hermux must uncover what's really happening on the island, find the missing squirrel and save the day—and deRosenquil's roses— without getting stung in the process.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Hermux Tantamoq--watchmaker, detective, and mouse extraordinaire--is back with a fourth mystery adventure for his many fans. This time Hermux, while planning his wedding with aviatrix Linka Perflinger, is drawn into a case involving the long-lost DeRosenquill heir from Thorny End, city of squirrels and rose capital of the world. He and his talented pet ladybug Terfle uncover a plot to destroy perfumer Reezor Bleesom and his rose plantation; it must be the inspiration of beautiful but wicked cosmetics magnate Tucka Mertslin and her associate, thuggish Killium Wollar. The good-natured Hermux encounters fur-raising opponents--a huge black widow spider, trigger-happy squirrel guards, and killer bees--while chasing leads to a sinister island where the worst nearly happens. Hoeye, who has been a designer, photographer, and teacher before starting his “Hermux” series with Time Stops for No Mouse, designs a plot with exciting twists, clever characters, and witty comments to sweep both mice and squirrels along to a satisfying conclusion for new readers as well as fans of Hermux, whose popularity now rivals that of Geronimo Stilton. (Hoeye’s first book has been translated into twenty-four languages.) The triumphant detective and his fiancée do not quite have time to get married, but they are brimming with plans and will surely be back for a wedding and another exhilarating case. Captivated readers may enjoy checking out Hoeye’s web site, hermux.com. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
VOYA - Catherine Gilmore-Clough
Hermux Tantamoq, watchmaker, gentleman, and sometimes detective, returns in this fourth installment of Hoeye's series. Having won the heart of lovely aviatrix Linka Perflinger, the unassuming mouse should be enjoying smooth sailing. But Hermux finds himself up to his whiskers in trouble when a brief business trip results in a commission to search for a missing heir. What should be a simple case will have Hermux fighting for his life and those of his nearest and dearest as the rotten core at the center of sleepy Thorny End is revealed. Fortunately this intrepid hero is not alone in the world. His pet ladybug-and business associate-Terfle and his dashing fiancTe, Linka, will do all in their power to help him solve the mystery and get home safely. Hermux tends to solve his cases through bravery, good-heartedness, and luck rather than Sherlock-style analysis, so some readers are sure to figure out the elements of the mystery long before Hermux does, which may delight or frustrate. Hermux has changed little from the original story, leaving more sophisticated readers longing for a little more character development-although Terfle's promotion to business associate comes with a deeper exploration of her qualities. Although this installment is not as fresh or original as earlier books, it will still charm readers, and with brief chapters and lots of witty dialogue it is certain to be a read-aloud favorite.

    Lovely!

Time to Smell the Roses is an absolute delight to read. Terfle is certainly the star of this book. With her newly pruned drawing skills and her ingenious mind, Terfle makes it clear that she is no longer Hermux's pet. She is an associate detective and a very good one at thay. While Time to Smell the Roses did feature pseudo-bad guys with guns, riveting adventures, a missing squirril, a murder, black widows, creepy coroners, crazy prank-obsessed scientists, and a more ruthless Tucka Mertslin (with luscious lips and a stuffed black widow to ornament her hair), the book is lovely. Hermux is the same unassuming, decent mouse, Linka Perflinger daring and endearing, and Terfle positively radiant. With quaint thank you notes, many, many delicious descriptions of food (ex: cherry-rosehip-peanut cruller and the skinny skinny butterscotch caramel latte), brave deeds, and new characters, Time to Smell the Roses is just as charming as the previous Hermux Tantamoq books, with a tad bit more adventure. Buy it! Read it! You will love it!

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ!

TIME TO THE SMELL ROSES is a great book. It's better than all the series put together! Terfle ,a ladybug, is my favorite character, who, in this book, loves to draw. I highly recommend this book.
