Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-A disappointing offering. In this beginning chapter book, Sophie and Jake, both bored with history, are asked by their teacher to test a new computer game, "Children Through Time." By typing in key words and clicking on the video button, the youngsters learn about ancient Rome, the Vikings, the Renaissance, the Gold Rush, World War II, and the Space Age. The history segments, which feature children living in the respective time periods, are loosely connected by commentary from the two students. "I wonder who's on the boat-and where they've been. Let's find out." Jake proceeds to click the video button. Interesting photographs and drawings do not make up for the fact that there is no plot or characterization here. It's like reading about two kids in front of a television, flipping channels. With so many good historical fiction titles available, there's no need to get this book. If you want a computer game, buy one.-Anne Knickerbocker, Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
