Overview

Jeffery Underhill and Honeybunch are a somewhat seminal band in terms of simple, intimate American indie pop -- their smooth, minimal three-piece pop approach and independent aesthetics served as a template for countless other scenes and projects. The surprising thing is that while many of the indie-pop bands to follow played into the "twee" or "cuddlecore" labels with precious, juvenile cutesiness, Underhills songwriting is earnest and unironic, and manages to be more emotionally effective than most -- songs like "Walking into Walls" and "Count Your Blessings" (collected from the band's single releases) lay intimate pop melodies over clean, jangling guitars with such skill and warmth that it's quite difficult not to be moved by them. Even if one can find the band's singles (released on a good number of independent labels, from Slumberland to Bus Stop), Time Trials is still the best and only compilation of Honeybunch's work, and it's a necessary addition to any good collection of indie pop.
