Meet the Author

"Author of curiously engaging novellas. His stories are not driven by action but by mood and metaphysics. His premises often begin with fairly standard, often vaguely science-fiction concepts, but he spins those concepts out into melancholy, thoughtful tales in which he explores the emotion and (often) dislocation that people feel when confronted by something outside their normal experience." - Devon Kappa

    Interesting Idea, Poor Execition

The idea is intriguing. In the hands of an experienced author, it might blossom into something complex and fascinating. Unfortunately, in the hands of this author, the idea does not have a chance to grow because the writing is substandard. Grammatical rules and notation are brutalized to ill effect. The author's disdain for quotation marks is a notable example. Worse, the fundamentals of storycraft -- characterization, time and place, pace, narrative logic -- are barely recognizable, where they exist at all. The reader is not given a chance to connect with the characters or empathize with their plight before the author launches into exposition about his theory of time travel. Stories flounder and sink when the reader does not care about the characters. If this story was a boat, it wouldn' t even make it out of the harbor. I think the author would benefit from studying storycraft and practicing with simpler ideas. Once he has mastered the craft,he can return to his idea for this story and compose a stronger novel that people actually want to read and recommend to others. Hopefully, he'll do so before a more skilled author steals takes his idea and develops it into something brilliant.

    Um.. What?

Take my rating for what it is worth, but I am 5 pages in and I can't keep reading. I am so lost. I think I can see kind of what the author was aiming at, but it just doesn't come across.

First, and this is my pet peeve, the formatting is horrible. There are no "quoted" conversations, just thoughts of what other people said verbatim. I understand the main character is talking about time travel, and thinking about conversations and occurrences that occurred in other times, but it is not coming across well. Sentences run and run and don't seem to go anywhere. Add to that the repetition that Time is the enemy and I just can't take it anymore. Maybe I will come back to it another time and see it all the vague inferences go somewhere and connect further in the book, but not right now.

    Okay

Not one of his best. It took me a while to get into the tale -- a little confusing at first. Then when things were just starting to get interesting, the story ended abruptly.

Left me scratching my head wondering if I missed something.

I really tried getting through this book but, just couldn't. Just as I'd start to get interested again, he'd start to on and on about nothing. I finally gave up.

A fast read that dives right in at the start.

Despite the lack of quotation marks and the unfixed viewpoint, this is a fast-paced story about time travel and some of the dangers that it entails. Each chapter is almost a short story which feeds into the storyline. Certainly a different type of read from what I am used to. After getting lost briefly, I picked up the thread and was able to follow along. Interesting concept; intriguing enough that I look forward to the challenge of his other ebooks.

No wonder they gave this book away for free! It is probably the worst book that I have ever read. I really tried to stick with it under the assumption that it would get better and eventually make sense. All it really did was make me feel like I may have taken the same dose of acid that the author took while writing it!
