Liam should have perished on the Titanic, Maddy was fated to die in an airplane crash, and Sal was doomed by a house fire. Instead, they all now work as TimeRiders. Choosing a life of isolation and danger over certain death, guided by the mysterious Foster, and aided by a hulking AI homunculus, these teenagers fix the timeline when rogue time travelers threaten to break it. Their first job is daunting as a scientist, disgruntled by the slow pollution of Earth and collapse of human civilization, takes a squad back to WWII and discourages Hitler from invading Russia, producing a future radically different from our own. In this first of the series, Scarrow efficiently gathers and introduces his likable protagonists, only to split them up for much of the book as half the team journeys back to post-WWII looking for clues. This is not the volume for readers hoping to learn Sal's backstory, or to see each character long for what they have lost. These are traded for forward momentum as each team must deal with larger and larger barriers thrown in their paths—from internment camps to zombies—and must learn their new jobs on the run. Time travel produces plenty of fodder for reader education and introspection, especially as the team base is located in New York in a time bubble on the eve of 9/11. The villain even has his own internal demons; nothing is too black or white and victory is hard-won in Scarrow's world. Gr 8 Up—In this rollicking adventure, three teens are plucked from obscurity just before their deaths and offered the chance to join the secretive TimeRiders organization, which was formed to stop rogue time travelers from destroying the world. Liam O'Connor should have died on the Titanic in 1912, while Maddy Carter was supposed to meet her demise on a plane in 2010, and Sal Vikram should have perished in a fire 16 years later. By reliving the catastrophic events in New York City on 9/11/2001, the trio monitors history for any large or small deviations by using pattern recognition, computer science, and espionage skills. In this first of a planned nine-book series, the new recruits and Bob, their half-human, half-robot computer-support unit, are tasked with preventing futuristic physicist Paul Kramer from altering the past so Nazi Germany wins World War II. While Liam and Bob travel to wartime Germany to thwart Kramer's plans, Maddy and Sal remain in New York City, forced to witness Manhattan's destruction. Time travel has become a reality in the future—but it becomes a dangerous reality when a megalomaniac decides to travel back to 1939 and tell Adolf Hitler how to win World War II. Imagine the invasion of the White House by Nazi storm troopers in the 1950s...or Times Square 50 years after surrendering to fascist rule...or a devastated world populated by cannibalistic mutants, which are all that remain after a nuclear explosion. It's up to a team of teens plucked from imminent death across time to stop the altering of reality—the real reality—and put time back on track. This is an interesting premise populated by engaging, well-developed characters, including an Irish porter saved from drowning on the Titanic, a computer hacker rescued from a fatal plane bombing and a girl from Dubai snatched from a house burning in the future—not to mention the bionic robot named Bob. While the ending brings closure, there are still plenty of opportunities for a sequel, possibly multiples, to follow. (Science fiction. 12 & up)

    Exciting concept!

    This was a great book. One of those that you just don't want to put down. It's an easy read and has a fun and different concept. The three main characters are rescued from the past and future and from certain death. They are given the choice to join the Time Riders, or be abandoned to their fate. The Time Riders are tasked with protecting the present, past and future from rouge users of the time machine from going back to alter history.

    I would reccomend this to anyone that is interested in time travel and alternate universes. Currently, Barnes and Noble seems to only have the first in this series...I'm really hoping that they plan to acquire the next two books and any that follow!

    Three teens, all from different time periods, have the same man visit them asking them the same question: Do you want to die, or do you want to live a strange but helpful life? Each choose to live. They come together as Time Riders, a group of people who live days over and over again looking for any significant changes in the world. Liam, Maddy, Sal, and their robot, Bob, are responsible for watching the world on September 11, 2001. They're not allowed to do anything, as it will change the entire history of the world. When they notice something amiss, Liam and Sal travel back in time for a reconnaissance mission. While their time is informative, they miss the window of opportunity to return. Stuck in the past, they need to learn everything they can to change the future and set the world back to normal. Back in the present day, Maddy is dealing with her own troubles. Liam and Sal's travels to the past changed their world, creating grave danger. Can the team set the world to rights? The changes in both time and perspective intensify the situations in TIME RIDERS, creating a fast-paced read you won't want to put down. This story provides lots of action, lots of danger, and lots of plot twists.

    Its a seriously good book, its has your typical life in it, gross stuff, peril, challenges, but with a fictional twist to it. Its totally AWESOME!!!! I love it!!! -km

    Good suspense Good suspense!

    This story had a lot of suspense with just enough action to keep the pages turning. I loved the parts when they are being chased by humans who have been turned into flesh-eating creatures. Definitely worth the read. Teen+

    OH MY GOD!!! YOU HAVCE TO GET THIS BOOK!

    This book is AMAZING! Full of non-stop action, and theres also a hint of humor hidden in it! best book i have read in years! i hope this author makes more FAST!

    Liam, Sal and Maddy are saved, but are met by another fate. They must keep their identities hidden. No one knows them, no one can see them and they are just like ghost. Foster takes them to his secret lair in New York. Foster shows them the lair, but they are let down because how the lair looks. There were old cable wires and dim lights. Later on Foster tells them the world needs their help. A madman named Professor Haas and his helper Mr. Kramer are trying to take over the world in another parallel universe by using the Nazi’s Army. (“A shift is the result of time being disturbed” Foster said). (20).Luckily they are not alone. They meet a super android named B.O.B, who helps them on their mission to save the world.

    This book had a true excitement to it. The whole purpose of the book has true meaning. It leaves you turning pages with interest and motivation to read all day long. The author did an excellent job writing this book. Liam is a very brave boy. Sal is the young one, who needs guidance. Maddy is the most technologically inclined of the three. Bob is hilarious and he goes right to your heart. It was very touching.
