Overview

The Doomsday Code: the third book in Alex Scarrow's exciting TimeRiders series Liam O'Connor should have died at sea in 1912. Maddy Carter should have died on a plane in 2010. Sal Vikram should have died in a fire in 2029. Yet moments before death, someone mysteriously appeared and said, 'Take my hand . . .' But all three have been given a second chance - to work for an agency that no one knows exists. Its purpose: to prevent time travel destroying history . . . In 1993 British computer hacker Adam Lewis finds his name in a coded manuscript that is almost one thousand years old. How did Adam's name get in there . . . and why? Confronted by Adam in 2001, the TimeRiders travel back to Sherwood Forest in 1193 to discover the origins of the ancient message. But when a strange hooded man appears interested in the same thing, they begin to wonder what terrible threat this cryptic link from the past holds for the future . . . Alex Scarrow used to be a rock guitarist, then he became a graphic artist, then he decided to be a computer games designer. Finally, he grew up and became an author. He has written a number of successful thrillers and several screenplays, but it's YA fiction that has allowed him to really have fun with the ideas and concepts he was playing around with when designing games. He lives in Norwich with his son, Jacob, his wife, Frances, and two very fat rats. The TimeRiders series: TimeRiders; Day of the Predator; The Doomsday Code; The Eternal War; Gates of Rome; City of Shadows; The Pirate Kings Alex's thrillers for adults: A Thousand Suns; Last Light; october Skies; Afterlight; The Candle Man

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Magi Evans
In England in 1994, Adam Lewis translates and publishes one line of a previously undecipherable document. In 2001 New York, a time wave occurs, and Maddy, Liam, and Sal must take action to correct the change in history caused by Adam's translation. The three young people are Time Riders, monitoring history and going back in time to fix whatever changed it. In this third volume of the "Time Riders" series, Liam takes their two biosupport units, Bob and Becks, to England in the time of the Crusades. The document Adam translated has ties to the Holy Grail, a parchment supposedly discovered by Richard the Lionheart during the Crusades, and subsequently brought to England. Liam, Bob and Becks arrive in Nottingham just after the Grail was stolen by a seemingly indestructible man known as The Hood, a member of a band of bandits led by James Locke. Nottingham is in turmoil, and it appears that a peasant revolt is what will cause the change in the historical timeline. Liam takes over as sheriff in order to prevent the rebellion, while searching for the Grail in order to save the life of King Richard's brother, John, who is destined to become King after Richard's death. Liam discovers that Locke and the Hood are also time travelers, who want to use the Grail to change their own timeline, when Earth will be ruined by climate change. Kidnappings, swashbuckling sword fights, and castle sieges entertain, but readers also get an interesting history lesson. The Time Riders display just the right amount of bravery and insecurity over the awesome responsibility of determining which actions will fix the timeline or make it worse, a conundrum that fans of time travel stories have enjoyed since H. G. Wells. This is a worthy addition to the genre. Reviewer: Magi Evans
