Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Although Warhola's artwork is well designed and sometimes delightfully quirky, this retelling of Andersen's familiar story is not nearly as effective as Barry Moser's recent, more unified and distinctive version. Warhola's comedic talents are considerable, but in this case the blend of fantasy and humor does not match the character of the story, e.g., Andersen's mysterious and magical dogs are made to resemble Looney Tune bulldogs with bright round eyes rather than the compelling creatures they must be in order for the story to work. Thompson freely deviates from the original text--instead of killing the king at the end of the story, the dogs swallow and then antiseptically spit out the royal couple--and her cliche-ridden text is neither interesting nor lively. Ages 4-8. (Aug.)
School Library Journal
PreS Up-- Andersen's familiar tale is retold without some of the violent details of the original. Rather than cut off the witch's head, the soldier drops her down the hollow tree, where ``To this day she is trapped . . . with chests full of coins and only the echo of her own voice.'' The king and queen are not dashed to pieces, but are swallowed whole by the largest dog, who promptly spits them out when they agree to allow their daughter to marry the soldier. Warhola's watercolor illustrations lack the depth, the innovative perspective, the cohesiveness, and the artistic appeal of those he created for Jack and the Beanstalk (S. & S., 1989). They range from dark full-page spreads to several small vignettes on a white page, with no apparent conformity of layout, creating an uneven result. His illustrative style varies as well. A caricature soldier and princess (Ken and Barbie?) are surrounded by mobs of cartoon people amid a fairy-tale castle and street scenes. He's best at depicting the three saucer-eyed bulldogs (genies of the tinderbox) and the truly horrid character of the old hag. Of the single-edition versions available, only the one illustrated with Warwick Hutton's abstract watercolors (McElderry, 1988) retains the original milieu. Barry Moser's dramatically illustrated adaptation (Little, 1990)--the most entertaining--moves the story to the post-Civil War era in the mountains of Tennessee. --Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

Meet the Author

Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen
Reared in poverty, Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen created more than 200 folk and fairy tales beloved by countless generations of children -- and adults.

Biography

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was born in Odense, Denmark, to a poor family. He left home as a 14-year-old to seek his fortune at the theatre in Copenhagen. Andersen began writing plays and poetry before he left for Copenhagen, but it was not until 1835 that he published the first of the fairytales that would bring him international renown. Since then, his over 200 fairytales have enjoyed undiminished popularity, providing the basis for favorite American interpretations such as Disney's The Little Mermaid.
