Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Every critter has its day, or so goes the thinking in this meandering tale that touches on issues of tolerance, perception and self-esteem. Tinka, a sheep "the size of a cupcake," doesn't exactly fit in on the McEwen farm, where the ewes consistently tease her or give her the cold shoulder. Luckily, Tinka can take comfort in her friendship with Sooty, a clownish crow. It's Sooty's support, in more ways than one, that helps Tinka accept herself and become the envy of her fellow fleece-bearers. Unfortunately, readers must shear through slack pacing and forced whimsy to find the positive message. Dohaney, who has previously published under another name, illustrates the text with watercolors accented with pencil shading. The stylized representations are frequently distracting: the regular ewes' faces are blue while Tinka is uniformly a chick-like yellow; Sooty's head is bigger than his body; a "purple spider" that features prominently in the plot looks much like an ameba (comprised of violet flowers). With no shortage of available titles about being different and/or small, youngsters may want to look beyond Tinka's tale. Ages 3-7. (May) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Tinka is a teensy-weensy sheep, "the size of a cupcake," whose sheared wool produces "only enough yarn to knit a tiny sweater fit for a hamster, or an egg cozy." Unable to fit in with the larger sheep, who might accidentally squish her in their sleep, Tinka's only friend is Sooty, a comical crow who amuses her with his antics. Poor little Tinka is too small to see the "huge purple spider" that appears on the faraway hill each spring, and the other sheep laugh at her when she begs them for any scrap of information about what he looks like. But then Tinka realizes that while she is too small to see over the backs of her fellow sheep, she is just the right size to be carried on Sooty's back to meet the revered spider in person. After a breathtaking ride, in which Tinka feels "bigger than the biggest sheep there ever was!" she discovers that the sought-after "spider" is no spider at all, but a branching field of thousands of tiny purple flowers. Safely home again, she goes happily to sleep in her own cozy bed with a crown of purple flowers beside her, feeling strong in the power of her wondrous new knowledge. Dohaney's muted pastel watercolors create a soft, alluring world for tiny Tinka to explore, and Tinka's curiosity and pluck are bound to make her a beloved favorite of readers, large and small. 2003, Atheneum/Anne Schwartz,

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Tinka, "the size of a cupcake," lives with four normal-sized sheep on a farm. Different from her peers (she grows only enough fleece to produce a sweater for a hamster), she is shunned. However, she does have one friend, Sooty, a round-bodied crow. Every year, the sheep celebrate when they see what appears to be a large purple spider spreading across a faraway hillside, because they know that it heralds the coming of spring. They dream of visiting this magical place, but can't get past the fence. With Sooty's aid, Tinka flies through the air, views the beautiful landscape below, and solves the mystery of the spider, which turns out to be a cluster of purple flowers. Shimmering in warm pastel shades, Dohaney's watercolor and colored-pencil artwork excels in its comic depictions of the two friends. In one scene, Sooty struggles to eat a worm and eventually ends up wearing it as a turban. Tiny details, like a column of ants toting a piece of macaroni and a cereal bit, encourage multiple readings. This tale of individuality and friendship makes a sweet choice for spring storytimes or lap readings.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    Tinka is our new favorite!

We accidentally stumbled upon 'Tinka' at our local library and my girls, ages 5 and 3, were hooked. They made me read it through twice in a row and then couldn't stop talking about it later. When we went back to the library with hopes of reading 'Tinka' again, it was checked out and they were really disappointed. They kept talking about the little sheep 'no bigger than a cupcake,' until my mother finally ordered them their own copy. I think this book appeals to young children because they are themselves little people in a very big world, always wanting to see what they can't, hoping someone will lift them up or give them a chair or stepstool to stand on. I disagree with the critic who writes that the illustrations are distracting. In a world of fast-paced video games, computers, and garishly illustrated comic books that most young children live, I think the book's artwork is a refreshing opposite and something more children's books could use. We love Tinka!!!!

    My daughter's favorite book

I happen to know this author and watched with enthusiasm as this book was published. I believed in the author and the story. I never told my daughter or my nieces that this was a story near and dear to my heart. Without this information, it has become a 'classic' to all of them. Her illustrations are beyond charming and the story endearing. A MUST READ for all. Can't wait for the next book!

    Fell in love with Tinka

Tinka, the sheep the size of a cupcake, won *this* reader's heart. Tinka is a touching story about a cute little sheep who struggles with being different, but in the end finds out just how special she is. The book is delightful; i'm betting kids will savor the re-reads, finding new details in the exquisite, soft-colored pencil drawings each time. I especially loved the image of Tinka and Sooty laying back in the flowers, giggling, not a care in the world. There is joy and delight on every page of this book. It is a true gem, beginning to end.
