Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Kelsey X. Echols, MD (Regions Hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center)
Description: This is the seventh edition of a concise review of clinical features of common conditions seen in adults and children in the emergency department. It offers commentary on the differential diagnosis of common presenting chief complaints with numerous color photos and figures to aid in assessment and treatment as well as disposition.
Purpose: This ambitious pocket manual is meant to provide an overview of the breadth of emergency medicine. It mirrors the field's most trusted textbook (Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Study Guide, 7th edition, Tintinalli et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2011)), but is designed in a format that is amenable to use during a shift in the emergency department.
Audience: The content is broad enough to be used by a wide range of emergency medicine providers, including medical students, residents, midlevel providers, and physicians. The book succeeds in presenting adequate detail to continue to be useful even to seasoned practitioners.
Features: Like the textbook, this manual covers the entire field of emergency medicine in step-wise fashion, beginning with resuscitation and then moving through each organ system. The discussion of presenting chief complaints and diagnoses include relevant color photos as well as relevant ECG and high-quality x-rays, ultrasound, and CT scans. The many tables clearly provide essential information such as medication dosing for resuscitation and sedation. The pediatrics section is expanded and new chapters cover relevant topics such as low probability ACS, thromboembolism, occlusive arterial disease, nausea and vomiting, bowel obstruction, acute urinary retention, renal emergencies in children, food and water-borne illnesses, and hip and knee pain. The information is up to date with the current standard of care in emergency medicine.
Assessment: This manual mirrors the field's most trusted textbook using a format that is both concise enough to be useful in a busy emergency department and thorough enough to provide excellent patient care. At 992 pages, this is not a small pocket book, but it amasses an impressive breadth of information with full color design as well as useful and current guidelines for resuscitation and antibiotics. The practical format will assist its users in providing skilled and timely emergency care.
