Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Tiny is a very big dog and he and his human friend go everywhere together. Today they are headed for the library, but no dogs are allowed inside—so Tiny must wait. After his friend selects a wagonload of books, Tiny must pull the load. They end up home under a tree enjoying all the wonderful new books. A simple story with plenty of visual clues and a repetitive and predictable text. A Viking "Easy-To-Read" Level 1 book with a description of the reading levels on the back cover. 2000, Viking, $3.99. Ages 4 to 7. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-This is the third book about the giant beige dog that follows his young owner everywhere. The best friends' latest adventure takes them (and a little blue bird that appears on every spread) to the library. With card in hand and a red wagon to haul his books home, the boy and his dog rush off enthusiastically, "Time to go!" The child chooses his books while Tiny is forced to wait outside ("Sorry, Tiny. No dogs in the library"). The cooperative pooch helps carry the books to the wagon and to pull the heavy load home. The simple sentences and expressive, cartoonlike, brightly colored illustrations will have beginning readers clamoring for more. The reading level is easier than that in Cynthia Rylant's popular "Henry and Mudge" series (S & S). Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Tiny is a very big dog and he and his human friend go everywhere together. They play at the park and lake, watch TV together, but on this day they are headed for the library. Whoops, the sign at the door says no dogs are allowed inside—so Tiny must wait. His friend makes selections for himself and books that he thinks Tiny will enjoy. Now they have wagonload of books, and only Tiny can pull the load. They end up home under a tree enjoying all the wonderful new books. Much like Clifford and Emily, the dog Tiny is huge, but the illustrations are more realistic than in the Clifford sereis. This reissued title is a Level 1 book in the "Penguin Young Readers" series which emphasize a simple story with plenty of visual clues and a repetitive and predictable text. It has been labeled as Guided Reading Level "D." The opening page contains a note to parents and educators about the series and tips for making best use of the book. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
