Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Freddie the Tadpole sees a frog and exclaims, "I want some legs like those." The frog tells him to be patient and "nibble, chew, and gnaw." Freddie does so and at last, becomes a frog. The simple, straightforward story line is easy for toddlers to follow. Interesting words have been included in the rhythmic, rhyming text, such as "slithery" and "jiggle-jaggle." The textures of the touch and feel sections on each page are inviting, from the smooth black tadpole, to the bumpy frog, to the water weeds. Little ones will learn about fish, snails, lily pads, and other water life in the collage illustrations. Their eyes may pop just like a frog when they see the final page lift up to a three-page high, full grown frog. This is on heavy cardstock whereas the rest of the book contains board pages. This is an attractive way to introduce young children to nature. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
