Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Amigurumi (Japanese for "stuffed toy") is a popular trend in crafting, and several amigurumi collections have hit the shelves in the last year. Snow, the crafter behind the popular web site Roxycraft, enters the fray with this short but sweet book of crocheted animal patterns. The 20 toys in the collection range from the expected (pig, lamb, and mouse) to the quirky (beaver, lemur, and hedgehog)-and they are all cheery, colorful, and cute. A beginners' tutorial provides full-color photographic illustrations of basic crochet stitches, and the directions are clear enough for first-time crocheters to understand. Amigurumi has instant appeal for teens and young adults, but parents and grandparents might also enjoy making these cute critters for the kids in their lives.

Great patterns that are quick, easy, and can be easily expanded on

I love the patterns in this book. They are cute, fun, and easy to make. My only complaint is I did not learn how to crochet from this book. I had to watch videos online as, for me, the book was not comprehensive enough on how to actually crochet. So if you have never crocheted before and don't know how, this book may not teach you; however, the patterns are so great and simple that once you do learn (and there are plenty of online sources) you will have hours of enjoyment.

Also, they are very versatile (being mostly circles) I've made so many of my own patterns thanks to this book.

    Very Poor - Typos everywhere

I couldn't even get beyond page 7 and understand what the author was trying to say. There were not only multiple typographical errors on one page, but in a single sentence! How can the directions be trusted?

And most of the illustrations are distorted.

    Don't buy this book

    Good

This book has full color photos of the completed projects, and instructions on how to begin crocheting and all the stitches you need to know. The projects are simple and cute. By putting in about 2 hours you can complete one of these lovable creatures. The book includes patterns other books have: turtle, penguin, bear, pup, koala, elephant, etc. while having some other ones that are unique to this book: beaver, frog, lemur, bumblebee, lamb, lion, hippo, fox, hedgehog, etc. The two problems I had with this book are that there isn't a stitch count at the end of the line and that almost all of the bodies look identical. There are a few such as the fox and the bee for example that are different, but the koala and the frog look almost identical. Overall, if yo are beginning amigurumi, this is the book for you because the patterns are simple and easy to complete.
