The seven crew members are separated, held in a state of suspended animation for an undetermined period of time, and eventually reborn into a fantastical subterranean world totally naked, hairless -- and deeply altered. Science fiction fans who first read Titan in 1979 will be pleasantly surprised by how well Varley's masterpiece of imagination -- a blend of Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey and L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz -- has withstood the test of time; and younger genre fans who know Varley only from more recent works (Steel Beach, Red Thunder, Mammoth, et al.) will be blown away be this aptly titled cult classic.
