Two teenagers discover true love aboard the doomed ocean liner

Elizabeth Farr never wanted to return to America. During her family’s vacation abroad, she has fallen in love with England, and is despondent when her father refuses to let her stay. Returning to New York means having her debut into society, and that means a swiftly arranged marriage. Elizabeth will never go to college, never learn to be a reporter—as she sees it, her life is over as soon as the Titanic reaches port. Of course, if she’s unlucky, her life will be over far sooner than that.

As Elizabeth and her family settle into their first-class cabins, Katie Hanrahan, a young Irish girl with dreams of finding fortune in America, makes her way to a steerage berth. Both girls have plans for the future, but love and death are about to intervene.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Diane Hoh including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Cheryl Karp Ward
Wealthy, beautiful, but headstrong Elizabeth Farr-first-class passenger on the ill-fated Titanic-meets the man of her dreams: wealthy but rebellious artist Max Whittaker. Betrothed to a suitable man she does not love and prohibited from attending Vassar, Elizabeth battles her vain, foolish mother and controlling father to freely live her life, buoyed by Max's encouragement. In a parallel love plot in third-class, handsome Irish rogue Paddy Kelleher and beautiful, vocally talented colleen Katie Hanrahan also reveal their dreams and discover their love as the ocean liner sails toward doom. Set from April 10 to April 15, 1912, Hoh's novel uses several resources to provide good historical information with elaborate detail given to furnishing, ship layout, and fashion. Disparities exist between the classes in amenities and in treatment. In one scene, first-class passengers curiously view the third-class through locked gates; in another, Elizabeth's mother frets at third-class passengers attending the same church service. Ironically, Elizabeth envies the gaiety of the third-class while Katie envies the trouble-free lives of the rich. Although the pace in the beginning is slow, the events occurring following the hitting of the iceberg and the final moments, with people sliding into icy waters and filling the night with a "sea of screams," are page turners. An epilogue addressing the survivors is a nice closure. With the release of Titanic in video format and visions of teen heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio dancing in the minds of many YAs, this paperback is sure to delight those interested in the topic. Meet the Author

Diane Hoh (b. 1937) is a bestselling author of young adult fiction. Born in Warren, Pennsylvania, Hoh began her first novel, Loving That O’Connor Boy (1985),after seeing an ad in a publishing trade magazine requesting submissions for a line of young adult fiction.
After contributing novels to two popular series, Cheerleaders and the Girls of Canby Hall, Hoh found great success writing thrillers, beginning with Funhouse (1990), a Point Horror novel that became a national bestseller. Following its success, Hoh created the Nightmare Hall series, whose twenty-nine installments chronicle a university plagued by dark secrets, and the seven-volume Med Center series, about the challenges and mysteries in a Massachusetts hospital. In 1998, Hoh had a runaway hit with Titanic: The Long Night and Remembering the Titanic, a pair of novels about two couples’ escape from the doomed ocean liner. She now lives and writes in Austin.

    Very good book!

I read this book when I was in eight grade in my classroom. I've been looking for it for over four years! The book was very well written, I loved the romance in it, and I enjoyed the story. I just bought a used copy, but I'm just happy to have it!

Now if you're looking for the ultimate teen Titanic novel (serie

Now if you're looking for the ultimate teen Titanic novel (series), this one is it. Diane Hoh knocks this one out of the park. Perfectly mixed with history, love, drama, and everything one looks for in a good novel, Hoh delivers it with "Titanic: The Long Night" as well as her follow-up, "Remember The Titanic." I re-read these books so many times as a teen, even after my Titanic craze had fizzled a bit. Overall, it is an excellent book. The story lines weave effortlessly together. I think I'm going to go re-read it now...

    Powerful and Amazing Story

This book is one of the best I have ever read. I love historical fiction books and this was an exceptionally well written one. There was just enough romance and action in the book to hold my attention, without being too out there and unbelievable. I have read this book at least three times and plan on reading it several more. I would recomend this book to anyone who loves to read.

    Wonderful!

This is the first book I almost cried reading, which I rarely do. It was extremely well-written, and, although somewhat redundent, was captivating.

The best 'Titanic' book I've ever read!

I loved this book. The best historical fiction book i've ever read in my life. This story is about a wealthy girl who's engaged to a man she doesn't even love. Then she meets a person of her dreams and falls in love with him. Her parents don't approve of the boy and always keeps a sharp eye on her while on the ship. Soon enough the ill-fated Titanic starts to sink and she finds herself losing her father and her love. In this story there is also another girl who is accompanied by two brothers that one she begins to have a particular interest on. When the ship starts to sink, she is frightened of the elder brother being sealed in the sinking Titanic risking his life to save others. She lives with the younger brother. I highly recommend this to 'historical fiction' lovers. especially people who love to read about titanic.

    A wonderful book

This is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. I love adventure combined with romance, and this is exactly what this book has. If you haven't already read this book, I highly recommend it to anyone.'Titanic' is also my favorite movie, and this book has a lot of the same qualities that it has. A forbidden love, separated by the great tragedy of the Titanic. I like how this book combines the stories of two different young women. A definite must-read. So what are you wating for??? Go out and buy Titanic: The Long Night right now! :)

Read this years ago, and it's still with me...

I first came across this book when I was in the sixth grade, right after Titanic, the movie came out. So of course, I went and found everything I could on the subject and stumbled upon this treasure. I read it in one sitting, I remember, and now, seven years later, I was reminded of this book after my roommate and I decided to have a crying session and watch Titanic for the first time in years. This book is one that will stay with you, always. The sequel is just as good, Remembering the Titanic, and I thoroughly recommend that one as well. This one is definitely for all of the hopeless romantics out there, and it's a good book for historical information on the tragedy as well. Happy reading, everyone!
