Overview

At the opening of the New York World's Fair on April 21, 1964, the Texas Pavilion presented in its Music Hall an anthology musical revue called To Broadway with Love, performed twice a day by two different casts. This recording shows that the production takes a historical perspective, looking back over the last century of American and Broadway history. The tracks are medleys of material beginning with the Civil War era, first from the perspective of the South ("To Broadway with Love/Old Folks at Home/Dixie") and then that of the North ("Yankee Doodle Boy/Mary's a Grand Old Name/Every Day Is Ladies Day with Me/The 88 Rag/Till the Clouds Roll By"). Next comes World War I ("Over There/Three Wonderful Letters from Home/Would You Rather Be a Colonel with an Eagle on Your Shoulder or a Private with a Chicken on Your Knee?"). The rest is more Broadway history than American history, as songs from musicals of the 1940s dominate. But the presentation doesn't only look at the past. Having reached the present, songwriters Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick speculate about what may be heard on Broadway in the future by looking at what has come before. Will the next shows be biographies like their own Fiorello!? Or nostalgic looks at the past? Or very modern? Each possibility produces a song in the production number "Mata Hari Mine/Remember Radio/Popsicles in Paris." The result is appropriately lighthearted for the venue, even if it's hard to imagine this work ever taking the newly built No. 7 IRT subway train from its home in Flushing, Queens, into Manhattan to play in a real Broadway house.
