CLASSIFIED: F.R.E.A.K.S. Do Dallas

Beatrice Alexander, telekinetic special agent, is still adjusting to life among the F.R.E.A.K.S. while wiping out zombies and other supernatural threats. When Bea learns about her “special assignment” investigating a series of human disappearances with Oliver Montrose, her gorgeous but annoying vampire co-worker, she reluctantly agrees to go undercover. Disguised as a married couple, they infiltrate the gothic vamp scene in Dallas. While sniffing out clues, Oliver’s convincing public—and not so public—displays of affection have Bea swooning in her bustier and fishnets. Between contending with her fake husband’s ex-lover Marianna and feeling guilty for hiding the mission from her werewolf crush Will, Bea discovers she’s not the only F.R.E.A.K. keeping secrets. Clubbing with the undead turns bloody when Oliver’s old enemy, the Lord of Dallas, decides to seek his revenge. Caught in the crossfire, Bea is up to her neck in blood-sucking trouble.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
Posing as a couple has two special agents all confused, since the most complicated thing they are used to dealing with is their supernatural gifts. Telekinetic Beatrice Alexander never wanted to be a freak, much less a member of F.R.E.A.K.S., the Federal Response to Extra-Sensory and Kindred Supernaturals Squad that the national government has been running almost since it was founded. For the past two months, Bea's been working with the F.R.E.A.K.S., and so far the only upside is the relationship she's been working on with werewolf Will. Her Operation Lovebirds has taken a hit since Will's gone off to a camp to get in touch with his inner wolf, and Bea's hopes to keep a low profile are ruined when she's given a special assignment with ladies' man--well, ladies' vampire--Oliver Montrose. Now Bea's stuck in a vamp-friendly hotel in Dallas, posing as Oliver's wife and trying to infiltrate a local cabal of vampires that may be behind several recent missing persons cases. The case heats up fast, as do Oliver's attentions to Bea. Eventually, "Trixie," as Oliver insists on calling Bea, isn't sure if she's more annoyed by her supposed husband's relentless flirting with Marianna, the mistress of the hotel, or the fact that she's bothered by it. Bea only hopes they can solve the case and get out of there before she has time to figure it out. The second in Harlow's F.R.E.A.K.S. series (Mind Over Monsters, 2011) reads like an homage to Harris' tales of Sookie Stackhouse, though Bea seems to take herself a little less seriously.

    Witty, Funny & Climactic

When I read Harlow's debut, Mind Over Monsters, I was completely blown away. Suffice it to say, it was a no brainer that I’d be back for round #2. I read To Catch A Vampire almost immediately after I finished the first and devoured it just as quickly. Harlow's definitely found her niche and set herself apart in the urban fantasy genre with a pairing of clever humour and devilish antics. I feel like she’s really nailed Bea’s voice this time around and grown more confident in her storytelling. These books sort of remind me of the Sookie Stackhouse series only with a more likeable protagonist and a stronger story. Now we don’t see much of the other F.R.E.A.K. Squad members in this installment but it doesn’t detract from the story because Harlow amps up the tension to beyond electric. Though Harlow initially hinted at a love connection between Will and Bea in book #1 she quickly throws us off by pairing our protagonist with the vamp in this installment. And yes, while initially I was a huge WillBea fan, I’m all about OliBea now. This story sizzles which is to say the chemistry between Bea and Oliver is beyond hot. The tension that drives both Bea and Oliver’s relationship is stimulating and catapulted Oliver from abhorrent status to god-like in my book. Will’s a nice guy but he’s also overprotective and always underestimating our Bea. Here we’re given a deeper introspective into Oliver and his past and we quickly learn that below the suave exterior lies someone who is sweet and totally supportive. By the end, he becomes her dark angel. I can’t say enough how much I love these characters, especially Bea. She struggles with the burdens of her gift and her job along with her weight and all the other things that a normal woman does. She feels so real, only much more funny—like the BFF you’ve always wanted! To Catch A Vampire is mostly about the dynamic relationship with Bea and Oliver but there’s no shortage of twists and turns especially when concerning the ending. Seriously, this series just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait to see what new ride Harlow has in store for us for book #3!To Catch A Vampire is a more-than-worthy sequel to the F.R.E.A.K. Squad series and kept my heart pumping for more. As usual, the story is witty and funny and climactic. If you loved the first book, I have no doubt you’ll enjoy this one even more!

I could not put this book down! You cannot help but get wrapped

I could not put this book down! You cannot help but get wrapped up in the sarcastic and sometimes sassy mindset of Bea. It is so easy to see the adventure through her eyes because even though she is a member of F.R.E.A.K.S. she reacts like any average person would react when still not accustomed to that type of living. I mean seriously, not everyone have 250+ years to get used to this sort of life style. Not only does Jennifer Harlow deliver adventure and acts of daring due with a dash of sarcastic humor but she also throws in more of the twisted love triangle that I grew to love so quickly in the first book, Mind Over Monsters. I cannot WAIT for there to be a third book! Please keep writing!! Highly recommending that everyone pick up both books in the F.R.E.A.K.S series!
