Overview

Ebenezer Howard's To-Morrow is deservedly the most famous single publication in the history of modern town planning. Published in 1898, it was repeatedly republished under its more familiar title Garden Cities of To-Morrow. Howard founded the Garden City Association, today the Town and Country Planning Association; it generated a movement that spawned garden cities and garden suburbs in countries as diverse as France, Argentina, Germany, Japan, Russia and the United States. In England, it led to the construction of nearly thirty government-financed new towns after World War Two, including Stevenage, Harlow and Milton Keynes. Accompanied by a running scholarly commentary on the text, and a newly-written editorial introduction and postscript, jointly written by three leading commentators on Howard's life and work To-Morrow will become a compulsory purchase for serious students and practitioners of planning and for teachers and students of modern social, economic and political history.
