Overview

Lady Mara St. Bride has never backed down from a good adventure, which was how she wound up roaming the streets of London in the middle of the night, wearing nothing but a shift and corset beneath an old blanket. Luckily, her brother’s oldest friend, the devilishly sexy Lord Darius Debenham, answered her plea for help. Now she intends to repay the favor...

Before he was wounded at Waterloo, Dare had embraced everything life had to offer. Forever changed by the war, he now believes nothing—not even the interference of a lovely young minx like Mara—can rescue him from his demons. But Mara is determined to reignite his warm smile, and enlists the help of all the Rogues to offer Dare a temptation he cannot resist...

Meet the Author

Jo Beverley
Jo Beverley

Jo Beverley is widely regarded as one of the most talented romance writers today. She is a four-time winner of Romance Writers of America's cherished RITA Award and one of only a handful of members in the RITA Hall of Fame. She has also recieved the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award. Born in England, she now lives with her husband and two sons in Victoria, British Columbia, just a ferry ride away from Seattle, WA.

Biography

Jo Beverley is one the few authors writing English-set historical romance who is English. She was born and raised in England, and has a degree in English history from Keele University in Staffordshire. She and her husband emigrated to Canada in 1975 where they raised their two children. In 2009, the couple returned to England.

Though Jo started to write as a young child, it was only in the '80s that she began to think that it was something ordinary people could do, and after a talk at a local library, she settled to seriously writing her first historical romance.

Now, she is the author of over thirty romance novels and many novellas, which have garnered several RITAs from the Romance Writers of America, as well as several awards from Romantic Times, including two Career Achievement awards. She is a member of the RWA Honor Roll, and the RWA Hall of Fame.

Good To Know

Some fascinating outtakes from our interview with Jo Beverley:

"I'm English, born, raised, and educated, which has to contribute to the way I write my books."

"My profession -- once upon a time in another world -- was careers guidance, which involved visiting many different workplaces and learning about the jobs done there. This is a great education in the variety and complexity of life."

"I taught women-centered childbirth classes for 5 years, and that comes out in any childbirth scenes in my books.

"I'm a craft-dabbler, and I've tried most of them, including Tenerife lace, tatting, leatherwork, and stained glass, but I've never stuck with any. However, I once was a very good painter and I've recently decluttered all my craft materials to concentrate on drawing and painting as my artistic therapy for a demented author."

"I grew up in Morecambe, Lancashire, which is a 19th-century seaside town, but that's very close to Heysham, an ancient coastal village. They say the pre-Conquest church there is the oldest one in England still in use and there are stone-age tombs as well. We used to play on an Anglo-Saxon hogs-back stone near the church. I'm sure this easy contact with such ancient things tuned my mind to the past. I set my second book, The Stanforth Secrets, in Heysham, and it will be reissued in 2010." "My indulgences are really good cheese, bread, wine, coffee, and dark, dark chocolate (90% Lindt."

    Momma Hunt Review

o Rescue a Rogue was my delve back into the world of Romance. I haven't read a Romance novel since I was about 17 so I was skeptical, but I picked this up while on vacation from there leave a book take a book stash. I was instantly hooked.

In this story line, apparently a continuation of a long series of books about a group of men called the Rogues and their interactions with their various spouses. This story was about Mara a young lady spending time in London. Here she meets up with her brother's friend Dare (one of the Rogues) and he helps her out of a very sticky situation, the type you can only get into in 1800's London. As the story progresses you discover that Dare has been wounded in Waterloo and is currently battling to overcome an Opium addiction. Intertwined in the this love story is a bit of drama plus the intertwining of the other Rogues from the previous series books.

What I liked most about this book was that it was different from the Romance books I read in the past, this was more about the story versus burning loins. Now don't get me wrong, there is always a time and a place for burning loins, but it was a great story. One of the other aspects that I liked most was that I felt the books was very historically accurate for the time and I loved looking at London through the eyes of 18 year old Mara.

I enjoyed this book so much that I am going to go back and read a few more in thier series.

    Excellent Regency romantic suspense

In 1815 during the pivotal Battle of Waterloo, Lord Darius ¿Dare¿ Debenham is critically injured and rushed from the front. To dull his severe pain and help him heal, he receives medication, but finds out over time way he had way too much laudanum as he become addicted to the opiate. Now two years later, he fights his craving for the drug every moment he is awake. As he struggles to control his addiction and accusation that he cowardly fled the battlefield, family friend Lady Mara St. Bride wants the return of the old Dare that she secretly loved. She will do what it takes to persuade him that he can contain the demons and still live a fruitful fulfilling life in the light instead of humiliatingly hiding in the shadows. As Mara does anything and everything including touring London with a blanket and her undies and enlisting the other eleven Rogues, the last of them dares to think he can return to life with the love of Mara as his impetus. --- This is a fantastic finale to the superior Regency romantic suspense series, the Rogues. Mara is a courageous heroine risking her reputation and much more for the man she loves while the return of the other eleven of the Dirty Dozen provides a homecoming feel to the plot. However this story belongs to Dare as he struggles with everyday life having no dreams or aspirations for even tomorrow until Mara kicks his butt and heart into first gear. As has been the case throughout this exemplary saga, Jo Beverly writes an outstanding historical romance. --- Harriet Klausner

    I'm a believer!

I never read a full page to page romance book before. I was so glad that this was the first book I picked up! I had a great experience reading the relationship these to character's had. The amazing connection from their first meeting and how they over came the real meaning of committment. I never knew that these types of book could be so enjoyable as well as well written. I'm so a fan of Jo Beverley. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. It's trully a break from those text books!
