Editorial Reviews

Detroit Free Press
"Funny, sardonic and fast-paced. A damn fine mystery. The courtroom scenes are snapping with life, and the characters are nasty bits of business indeed."
Larry King
"Move over Scott Turow! 'To Speak for the Dead' is courtroom drama at its best."
Library Journal
"A finely tuned plot from first novelist Levine, who orchestrates his tense courtroom and medical scenes with expert panache, fluid prose, and sly humor. An excellent choice and the first in a series."
Publishers Weekly
"Levine spins his tale briskly, his use of medical evidence and legal argument heightening the excitement rather than weighing it down. Two more Jake Lassiter novels are to follow; that's good news."

    more from this reviewer

Kept me guessing all the way through

I love courtroom drama/mysteries and thisvstory did not disappoint. First book from this author that I've read and I know I'll read more. The main character, Jake Lassiter is easy to like and very funny. The plot line was interesting and the twists in the plot threw me off a couple of times which for me, makes the reading experience better. Highly recommend.

Best Courtroom Thriller Since "Anatomy of a Murder"

I've read them all. Grisham. Turow. All the way back to "Anatomy of a Murder" and "The Caine Mutiny." This is my favorite courtroom book. It introduces Jake Lasssiter, an unlikely hero and trial lawyer. He bounced around the NFL as a second string linebacker. He went to night law school and barely passed the bar exam. He's torn between wanting to win and a quest for justice. He's honest about the nature of the legal profession. "Hey, they don't call us sharks for our ability to swim." Lassiter doesn't trust his client, Dr. Roger Salisbury, who's been having an affair with his patient's wife. When the patient dies during surgery, well, you can guess who's charged with murder. The courtroom scenes can be both funny and heart-stopping, and the last scene of the book -- when the truth unfolds is as chilling as anything Stephen King has ever written. I'd start with this book, then move on to "Night Vision," "Mortal Sin," and "False Dawn."

    I Also Recommend:

"To Speak for the Dead" a Fresh and Thrilling Courtroom Tale (and Funny, Too)

I read "To Speak for the Dead" years ago in hardcover and was struck by its originality and fresh voice. It was author Levine's first of the Jake Lassiter series. Now, I've read them all, and it was a pleasure to go back to square one. (Levine went on to win a bunch of awards, including the John D. MacDonald, and was nominated for an Edgar).

Lassiter was a second-string linebacker for the Miami Dolphins who scraped by on the football field and then in night-law school. He's not the smoothest lawyer in town. More like a bull in a China shop.
But he has principles and a sense of right and wrong. He keeps "looking for the good guys" and is sad to find out he seldom represents any.

In the debut novel, Lassiter represents Dr. Roger Salisbury who, at first, is accused of professional malpractice, when a patient dies following surgery. Later, when it's learned the sawbones was romancing his patient's wife, he's charged with murder.

I don't want to give too much away, but I'll say this. The courtroom scenes are authentic, the dialogue crisp and occasionally funny, and the ending is as chilling as anything I've ever read. Get ready for a roller-coaster ride. I recommend the book without reservation.
