Docherty's watercolors give a nice comic touch, but they reserve the most beauty and simplicity for the scenes of home.

It will take more than a rainy day to stop one young boy's beach trip. Oh, yes, that trip will occur—even if only in his imagination! And what an imagination he has. Decked out in his bathing suit, flippers, goggles, and snorkel with his bucket, shovel and big yellow inner tube in hand, our determined hero imagines himself to the beach via airplane, sailboat, banana truck, and even camel. Once there, he enjoys the sand, sea, and friendship (again, the camel) before departing for home via steamboat, helicopter, bicycle, and tractor. But his dreams do not stop there. The final text for the story is: "So where to next?" Here is a book for children who enjoy dreaming big and for parents who thrill at their children's imaginative play. Docherty's lush illustrations use a blend of warm and cool colors to convey excitement and enjoyment. Readers get to live vicariously here, riding and tumbling right along with our main character. The book is pure delight. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green

K-Gr 2—A boy packs up all of the necessary gear for a day at the beach, like goggles, snorkel, flippers, bathing suit, and, of course, a big yellow inner tube. The only problem is: it's raining. His imagination then takes over as he secures an airplane, a sailboat, a truck, a camel, and some sand, and finally arrives at the sea. After he and his friendly camel enjoy a day in the sun and surf, the boy returns home via Antarctica, this time using a whole new set of ingenious vehicles. Where next? This clever book is complemented by beautiful ink and watercolor drawings of the landscapes that the boy has created. The simple narrative encourages youngsters to think for themselves and never to limit the places their imaginations will take them.—Kate Neff, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL
Kirkus Reviews
Spare language and charming art take a young boy on a wondrous, imaginary beach adventure. With snorkel and flippers in tow, the child exchanges his rainy weather for surf and sand, traveling by plane, boat, truck and camel through the desert to the salty sea. Each illustration encourages audience participation, cleverly revealing the subsequent method of transportation. Brevity answers the natural question when the boy returns: "Home. So where to next?" Against the plain dark background, the view outside his window depicts his future destination. Watercolorandink doublepage spreads utilize both warm and cool colors to enrich natural surroundings. Amusing details support minimal phrases; the friendly camel, with the yellow inner tube placed over his hump and toy shovel in mouth, assists with sandcastles and sunbathing. Thin lines capture the boy's joy amidst the crashing waves, adding shade and immediacy to the quiet narrative. Docherty's companion title, Little Boat (9780763644284), succeeds in similar fashion when the timid vessel declares his rightful independence against the imposing ocean. No sunscreen is needed to enjoy these selections. (Picture book. 36)
