I'll never think of auctions the same way again ! I couldn't put it down, and am recommending it to my book club. if there's a sequel, sign me up now.

This year I learned that I can't trust Wall Street, political parties, banks, hospitals, insurance companies, or realtors. And now that I have read this book, I know not to trust auction houses. Well, at least I still have my dog. A very enlightening book. Fun to read, too.

This is a good book to take on an airplane or to the beach. But best if it is a long flight or a whole day at the beach, because you won't want to put it down.

No wonder this book was nomiinated for a 2004 Pulitzer Prize. First-time author Phillips has woven an intriguing tale with deft touches and unusual characters. I defy you to put it down, or think of sleep. Each chapter teases you into the next. There is real and solid information here about the machinations of the auction world. The author is obviously an expert observer, and watched the scandals that erupted in the l990's in their beginning stages. You will know who and what each character in an auction house does, and how their lives flow together and apart. Bravo. Very nearly a work of art, certainly a work of knowledge.
