Biographies of twelve prominent scientists, including the author, are included in this book that covers the subjects' fields of work: astronomy and astrogeology, analytical and cluster chemistry, genetics, gene therapy, anthropology, archaeology, alternative fuels, engineering, and public policy. Eleven of the scientists were born in the United States and all are presently involved in work here. Indira Nair was born in India and educated in both India and the United States. Each scientist discusses how they developed their interest in science, how they got where they are today, and things to think about when considering a career in science. More than half of each chapter is written in the first-person, with the scientist telling their own story. The work presented is extremely varied. Representative of the scientists are Carolyn Shoemaker, who in 1993 discovered the Comet Shoemaker, which crashed into Jupiter in 1994; Richard Smalley, who pioneered the supersonic bean laser spectroscopy; and Roberta Nicholsis, holder of three patents for flexible fuel vehicles. Of particular use to students are the photographs of the scientists, set in the background of a personal information box that includes current field of work, address, birth, education, significant accomplishments, previous vocations, and words of wisdom. Also included are photographs of the scientists' laboratories, a micrograph of a cancer-causing virus, a magnified polarized-light image of a grain of quartz, computer-generated images, a cross-section of a rock sample showing the evidence of the impact of an asteroid, a graph of light-absorption made while trying to simulate stardust, other graphs, and scientific models-all in black-and-white. The information is current and the knowledgeable student will be able to correlate it with current events, such as the fifteen-year, three-billion dollar genome project involving scientists in hospitals and universities across the world. In the five-page introduction the author states, "This is a personal book for young people like you who love, live, and breathe science." He then profiles a variety of scientists working in different disciplines: astronomer Carolyn Shoemaker and astrogeologist Eugene Shoemaker; analytical chemists Frank Asaro and Helen Michel; cluster chemist Richard Smalley; Paula Gregory, Richard Morgan, and Michael Blaese of the National Center for Human Genome Research; anthropologist Patricia Wattenmaker; and engineers Roberta Nichols and Indira Nair. Bortz offers a nice balance between personal information (including how these people got interested in science and their educational backgrounds) and the significance of their research. The use of direct quotes enhances the presentations. A boxed sidebar indicates each individual's current field of work; business title and mailing address; place and date of birth; significant accomplishments; previous work; and words of wisdom.
