Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-- Attractive watercolors show a young toad named Polly who reluctantly goes to school but refuses to join in the lessons. Unfortunately, the lively, humorous pictures are paired with a didactic, cumbersome text. Kept after school to practice, Polly encounters dangers that, predictably, make her see the value of learning her lessons. The story is bogged down with Polly's cliched thoughts: ``Practice my puffing? thought Polly. That's the silliest thing I've ever heard.'' After puffing up saves her from a heron's grasp, the text reads, ``Well, who would have thought puffing could be so useful? Certainly not Polly!'' Exclamation points abound, but they can't put life into the dull writing. --Kathleen Odean, Moses Brown School, Providence, RI
