Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
This well-organized book is packed with attractive pictures and important information, including facts about tobacco, its history, the various types consumed today, and the dangers of smoking or using tobacco in other ways. Every few pages, the book offers a "Searching Question," such as "It seems impossible to miss the obvious message that smoking is harmful and even deadly. Yet more and more children begin smoking each day. Can you think of other reasons why they might take up the habit?" The reading level is slightly above eighth grade, but the book is designed to appeal to students in middle school, with an abundance of photographs and other illustrations, as well as short sections of only one or two pages each on a variety of topics. The in-depth information that high school students might need for a report would have to be supplemented by other sources. The pictures show more males than females and decidedly more whites than people of color. The main text is supplemented with a glossary and reading lists, both print and web-based. This is part of a series called "Straight Talking." Reviewer: Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
