Toby the Tabby Kitten

Toby the Tabby Kitten

by Colleen Stanley Bare

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
This endearingly illustrated photo-essay follows a Manx named Toby from kittenhood to full grown cat. While we become acquainted with Toby, his likes, dislikes, and playful habits, we also become more informed about cats in general, and the Manx breed specifically. An index has been included for young report writers or pet owners-to-be.

PreS-Gr 2Full-color photos follow the activities and display the attributes of a little girl's tailless Manx tabby kitten. Nothing much is made of Toby's taillessness, and perhaps the omission of all the silent ways a cat communicates from the information on "talking" best shows the brevity of each discussion. This is an unexciting cross between the story of a particular cat and a description of all cats. Toby and Sarah show little character and their story lacks focus, but the bright, attractive photos will win their book a reading. Afterwards, though, direct readers to Joanna Cole's A Cat's Body (1982) to really learn about cats, or backtrack to Cole's My New Kitten (1995, both Morrow) for full-color photos of kittens accompanied by a more coherent story line.Margaret Chatham, Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library of Fairfax County Library System, VA

Preschool and primary grade children will delight in this simple photo-essay about a tailless tabby cat, Toby. Rather than relating a lot of hard facts, the text is lighthearted and fun, focusing on the kitten's playfulness and the companionship it provides for its owner, a little girl named Sarah. Even so, children who don't know much about cats will come away with some good basic information about the animal's general characteristics and its eating, sleeping, and grooming habits. The book's greatest lure is the adorable color photos (including many close-ups) of Toby--hiding in a basket of tulips, climbing his first tree, playing with cat toys (string and Sarah's huge labrador, Duke), and sneaking a lick from Sarah's ice-cream cone. Librarians need only display the book jacket to ensure a brisk circulation.
