Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

K-Gr 3 - In these two easy-to-read books, Willems introduces two best friends. Gerald is a slightly stodgy, bespectacled elephant with a stumpy, downturned trunk. Piggie is more daring and whimsical, and, like many friends, the two complement one another. In My Friend Is Sad, Piggie tries hard to cheer her dejected friend. She disguises herself as a cowboy, clown, and a robot, but Gerald doesn't recognize her and is sad because she isn't there to enjoy the fun. Without missing a beat, Piggie points out that he needs new glasses. In Today I Will Fly, Piggie announces her intention to do so to her skeptical pal. In the end, though, Gerald is making adventurous plans of his own. With just a few tweaks of his expressive lines, Willems creates engaging characters. The stories move briskly, with a minimal word count and touches of whimsy throughout. Fans of the author's previous books should check the endpapers for a cameo appearance of his familiar pigeon. These simple, humorous stories will sound just the right note for beginning readers.-Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

My son and I adore the Elephant & Piggie books. They have fun stories, engage him, and help him practice his reading skills.

These books are beyond wonderful. My 1st grader was struggling with reading...because we have always read together, and she wanted interesting stories...and the stories that she was learning to read with were very short and blah. Then came Gerald and Piggie to the rescue! These books are fun, funny, and very expressive without using big words or long sentences. My daughter loves them so much that she gave one as a birthday gift to a classmate. :) I would recommend these books to anyone who would listen to me. :)

I love this book. I didn't even buy this for a little kid (though I did end up sharing it with my younger sisters one of whom was 6 or 7 at the time). I just came across it one day and was so amused by it I ended up buying it. I now make it a point to look out for new elephant and piggie books whenever I go book shopping. It's just so adorable and while it makes it easy for beginner readers it doesn't feel like most children's books. I still pull it out to read just for fun every once in a while and I'm 21.

Love Piggie and Elephant and the ENTIRE series. Both our boys have a set of the series. We especially relish the facial expressions. Great book for beginner readers as well. Again, HIGHLY recommend!

This book is part of a charming series, featuring Gerald the elephant and Piggie the pig. Mo Willems is an accomplished artist with a light-hearted, minimalist style and a great sense of humor! I read this book and other Elephant and Piggie books to my daughter, who is developmentally delayed. She finds the books easy to understand and outrageously funny reading after reading.

My 6 year old loves these books. His favorite animal is the pig and his older brother's is the elephant so it is a perfect fit for our house. The stories are cute and not overwhelming for the beginning reader. Plus it is a series so you can see what other adventures the pig and elephant go on.
