Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
The United States Coast Guard is one of the smallest branches of the nation's armed services. Yet, although the number of servicemen and women who serve in the Coast Guard may be small, the duties they perform are significant indeed. Members of the Coast Guard patrol coastlines, engage in seaborne rescue missions, interdict drug trafficking and serve in foreign lands during times of war. In this title from the illustrated "Acts of Courage: Inside America's Military" series readers are provided a look at bravery manifested by Coast Guard sailors. In some cases the heroic efforts of Coast Guard operatives conducting life and death efforts to rescue people from foundering vessels are presented. In other instances the bravery of Coast Guard service personnel patrolling waterways in Iraq are featured. Efforts to rescue trapped residents of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and to shuttle New Yorkers away from the Twin Towers on 9/11 also give evidence of the courageous efforts of Coast Guard guardians. These stories of individuals determined to help others are inspirational and may well inspire some readers to look within themselves and discover their own personal courage. Reviewer: Greg M.
