Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Greene
As this book proves, words can be fun to say. Even words that are not true onomatopoeias often have a sonic quality similar to what they represent, and word pairs that are not true rhymes can sound similar while bending your mouth in interesting ways. In this story a toddler ("toddle") and a duck ("waddle") lead a group of characters, making equally interesting sounds and movements, to the end of a seaside pier. Here they explore the beachside areas before the day is over and they wave "bye-bye." It is fun to repeat the parade of words as characters join the line. Likewise it is fun to read the word and search the panoramic beach and band scenes for who, or what, that word pairing represents. The pages are interactive, musical, and the organization intensifies the patterns. Amazingly, the pages are quite varied. A page with just the word "stop," for instance, offers a respite from the harried rhythm of the adding sounds. Some of the word choices are odd, however, like "hurry scurry" used to represent the sound of a dog moving. Some are also less sonically based than others, like the dancer's "twirl whirl," the horse's "dance prance," and the break dancer's "hip hop." The book also lacks in educational value—there is no clear story arc or thematic concepts, and it offers little usable vocabulary and no practice with sentence structuring. However, based around a unique concept, executed with moderate success, this book will keep a child's interest while likely differing from the books already on your shelf. Recommended for preschool age children exploring the sonic possibilities of words. Reviewer: Jennifer Greene
