Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
When a child is adopted as a toddler, his needs and those of his adoptive family are different from the needs seen in infant or school-age adoptions. Yet few resources are available to deal with these special issues. In this work, Hopkins-Best, a child development expert and mother of a child adopted as a toddler, provides a guidebook for those considering toddler adoption or those already struggling with its special challenges. She discusses at length strategies for dealing with issues such as a grieving toddler or attachment disorder. She also explains normal toddler development and possible variances in the adopted toddler. The appendix provides a wonderful list of resources. Perhaps most valuable are the anecdotes of both successes and failures from other toddler adoptive families. An important addition to all adoption collections.KellyJo Houtz Griffin, Auburn, Wash.

A 'Must Read' for those adopting toddlers

This book was one of the important resources we used in preparing to adopt our daughter at age four. It presents a comprehensive picture of the issues you may face when adopting a child past infancy. Adopting a child at an older age does present challenges, and toddlers have unique issues. For example, they do remember their prior caregivers, but they are not mature enough to understand what is happening or aritculate their feelings about it. This is a much needed book, and I highly recommend it! Christine Mitchell, author and illustrator of Welcome Home, Forever Child: A Celebration of Children Adopted as Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Beyond.

    I really Suggest this book.

Recently I recived this book, Before it came I had doubted that it would be worth the money , But I felt if I got any info out of it then it would be wroth it. However once I began reading it I was really surpised and how great it truly is. It not only helps a person threw the adoption issues, But makes think about things so you can make the best choice for your plans and it's point of views are very intresting. So I highly recomend this if your planning on doing a toddler adoption.

A book that opened my eyes

This is a very touching and informative book that has opened my eyes to a whole new world of adoption. The author gives wonderful advice on how to win the trust and affection of a grieving, raging toddler. We adopted a four-day old girl in 1969 and were spoiled by the ease of raising our daughter compared to what it might have been like to adopt her as a toddler. I do know one family that adopted four older siblings and the stress of trying to earn these childrens' trust all but broke up the marriage. I greatly admire anyone who does the right thing and adopts an older child. After reading this book, I actually feel a little guilty to have taken the easy way out. One has these dreams of adopting the cute little boy or girl next door but doesn't realize that the toddler available for adoption may have many special needs. An important book to read. Gisela Gasper Fitzgerald, author of ADOPTION: An Open, Semi-Open or Closed Practice?

    Excellent behavior coverage

Dr. Hopkins-Best does a wonderful job of making clear the toddler's unique position of being old enough to comprehend the dramatic change in his/her life, but too young to question, fully understand or articulate emotions about the change. I also appreciate how she covers the various forms of development (physical, cognitive, social/emotional) by age, then covers the variations to these developmental stages that can occur due to institutionalization. I found her discussion on how adoption may impact the toddler differently depending on where s/he is in developmental stage very informative. She covers a lot of territory drawing on existing literature, her own experience, providing anecdotal information from 30 families interviewed, and summarizing data from questionnaires by parents of 26 adopted toddlers. She addresses development, attachment issues and behavioral issues. We have read several books on older child adoption and potential post-institutional behaviors, but I have found this to be the most informative, in overall content, for our circumstances. (We do not yet have children home, so the books on specific issues are not yet applicable, although informative.) Further, it is the only one I have seen that is very specific to the ages 1-3 crowd. I like her approach of always staying involved and close to the child (in non-threatening ways), even if the child is overly independent. It will be helpful to have this understanding when I have new toddlers trying to keep their distance. I believe it is a worthwhile read for those contemplating or in the process of a toddler adoption. For those who will adopt or have adopted somewhat older children, some of the chapters on developmental effects during the toddler years might also be informative. Thank you.
