Saunders’s Toddler series of padded oversize picture books expands with this activity-filled collection of holiday-ready ideas for children. Tabbed pages demarcate the book’s five sections—Christmas Games, Out and About, Christmas Activities, Learning Fun, and Stories and Songs—with Saunders’s wiry cartoons of elves, children, gifts, and holiday décor enlivening the pages throughout the book. Rebuses, search-and-find pages, and “I spy” games combine with recipes, crafts, Christmas-themed explorations of simple concepts like letters and numbers, retellings of the Nativity story and The Nutcracker, Christmas carols, and even a quiz (“Do the fairies leave our Christmas presents? Yes or No?”). The diversity of options offers plenty of material to keep children entertained while they wait for a certain someone to slide down the chimney. Ages 2–5. (Sept.)

PreS—Tabbed pages lead parents and preschool teachers to different sections of Christmas and winter activities that include a search-and-find of Santa's workshop, a holiday-themed alphabet, and stories and songs. The activity chapter includes making cookies, cutting and pasting crafts, and writing a letter to Santa. The cheerful cartoon illustrations resemble Lauren Child's work in the "Clarice Bean" books (Candlewick), and the padded cover makes it easy for young ones to hold the book tight. Those looking for a mostly nonreligious way to celebrate the season will be satisfied.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
