From the Author

We chose the vocabulary for this book from two major sources: (1) words from actual TOEFL tests, and (2) words that are frequently used in academic settings. Learning these words will help you on the TOEFL and in college.

This book assumes that you already have a vocabulary of around 6,000 words or you have studied English as a foreign language in high school. Our example sentences strike a balance between the basic, frequently encountered words that you should already know and the new words you are likely to encounter on the TOEFL. We always try to use the simplest and clearest word meanings to make it easier for you.

Further, you will notice that we provide the basic uninflected form of a word in our vocabulary list. Nouns are in the singular, and verbs are in the infinitival form. Of course, when the vocabulary words are used in sentences, they are inflected and can play different grammatical roles. Comparing the basic dictionary form with what you find in the sentence should help you to learn meanings and usage.

Vocabulary questions are in the reading section of the TOEFL iBT, and, of course, the size and quality of your English lexicon can have a substantial impact on your performance on other areas of the test. A TOEFL vocabulary question asks the test taker to identify the meaning of a word in the context in which it occurs. A word may have several meanings and synonyms, but there are usually only a very small number of words that can be used interchangeably in a given context. Keep in mind that although it is important to be aware of the context of a word (that is, of the sentence in which it occurs), if you try to guess your way through the TOEFL solely on the basis of contextual knowledge, you are likely to run into problems.

A distinctive and helpful feature of this book is that we group words according to how the TOEFL iBT categorizes its questions. Words are organized into five areas: (1) Arts, (2) Life Sciences,
(3) Physical Sciences, (4) Social Sciences, and (5) College Life.

There is a further advantage to this book. Although the TOEFL test does not assume a test taker to have any prior knowledge of the subject materials on the exam, our readers will gain familiarity with some topics that are likely to appear on the test since we write about the topics that have appeared frequently on the TOEFL in the past.

We cluster sentences together by topic; you might notice that reading the example sentences can be like following a story. This should enable you to learn vocabulary more systematically and help you gain confidence in reading passages that are several sentences in length.

We hope that this book helps you to do well on TOEFL and master the English language. We hope that our audio CD speeds and strengthens your mastery of English. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to help you.

Good luck!

Master TOEFL Test Vocabulary— in a Flash!
If you want to ace the TOEFL and build your vocabulary, you made the right choice, because our flashcard book will help you do both.

TOEFL content is drawn from millions of possible words. Our expert did extensive research to compile this list of 1,000 high-frequency words that you need to know.

Our flashcard book is a unique toolkit for building vocabulary mastery, yet we designed it to be familiar and easy to use. We employ the International Phonetic Alphabet symbols to indicate pronunciations, and focus on the American use of English.

The flip side of each card features a definition and a college-level sentence. We group the words in the categories that are usually tested:
• Arts
• Life Sciences
• Physical Sciences
• Social Sciences
• College Life

These categories will also help you master the small things about English that can make such a big difference when you’re learning the language.

We carefully crafted this book in a way that will help you on the TOEFL test—and beyond it as well! Mastering the vocabulary is an investment in your future success.

Good luck on the TOEFL test, and best wishes in your educational pursuits!
