Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-Julia, a young girl with Crohn's disease, tells her friend that when she sits on the toilet for a long time she constructs toilet-paper flowers to make herself feel better. This launches a discussion between the two girls about how painful, depressing, and embarrassing the condition is. While the author, who suffers from the disease, is an expert in gastroenterology, his attempt to explain it to children is unsuccessful. The writing is stilted, and the illustrations are static, featuring two orange-tinted, very wide-eyed girls. While well-intentioned, this title misses the mark.-Christine A. Moesch, City of Tonawanda Public Library, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    Love, Love, Love your book

I have Crohns and my 5 year old is showing signs but does not have 100% diagnosis yet. I just recieved it last night and love the way this explains to a child what is going on with their body or if the parent is the sufferer it would be a great book to explain to your child what you are experiencing.

WHAT A GREAT BOOK FOR CHILDREN WITH CROHN'S DISEASE!!!!!

My daughter is eleven years old and was just diagnosed with Crohn's disease. This book helped me so much in explaining the disease to her. She loved the book and all the pictures!! She used the book to explain this disease to her friends. Then they all made toilet paper flowers together. This book brought awareness to kids who didn't understand what Crohn's disease was. Every parent with a child with Crohn's, every school nurse and every library should have a copy of this compassionate, well-written, beautifully illustrated and resourceful book. There is a great introduction for parents and a helpful glossary and web resources. The author should be commended for this book and his work with kids fighting this disease.

    Thank you thank you!!!!!

I just got my copy of this book and I absolutely love it. I have had Crohn's disease for two years. I am twelve years old. I loved the story and making the flowers. I have passed them out at school to my friends. Crohn's disease is hard enough but this book brought a smile to my face!! Thank you!!!

    Children's book made for children

When my child was diagnosed with Crohn's it was hard to expand to my other children. This book makes it simple and not so scary. My daughter loves the pictures. They bring something bright to a subject that is not so fun to talk about. It helped get the conversation started.

    FANTASTIC BOOK!!!!!!!!!

This book is a wonderful tool to be used in the home or in school. It is beautifully written with compassion and understanding from a child's perspective. The characters seem very real and genuine which will make the children reading the book able to relate easily. I don't have the disease, but it really taught me a lot about the illness. As a designer, I feel the illustrations are great. They are full of vibrant bright colors and full of life, a great inspiration to children suffering with the illness. The flower making instructions at the end of the book are the icing on the cake! All kids love crafts.
