ONE

“He’s coming around! Everybody get—”

Team Sergeant Nathan Vatz never finished his sentence. The Russian T-100 main battle tank on the opposite end of the intersection finished it for him.

Vatz slammed onto his gut, sliding across the rain-slick pavement as the office building fifty meters ahead exploded with a thunderous boom.

Shards of concrete, glass, and mangled metal arced into the cold night and fell in a hailstorm on the blackened remains of the HMMWVs and a pair of eight-wheeled Stryker infantry combat vehicles, behind which Vatz’s special forces team had taken cover. A black rose of smoke backlit by fire bloomed across the intersection, driven by a wind thick with the stench of cordite.

With a sudden lurch, the fifty-ton tank rumbled closer, its 152mm smoothbore main gun swiveling menacingly, tracks grinding over the bodies of the rifle squad—the tank’s first victims—who’d been hit as they’d dismounted from one of the Strykers.

Vatz wiped sweat from his eyes, cleared his throat, and spoke into the tiny voice-activated boom mike at his lips: “Victor Six, this is Vortex, over?”

His voice had cracked. Calm down. They just had to get the hell out of here. That was it.

But now their exfiltration had gone to hell. No bird to swoop in, land on the rooftop helipad, and whisk them to safety. No nothing.

And that tank wasn’t operating alone. The rest of that platoon had to be nearby, with dismounted forces from the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles parked outside the gate.

“Victor Six, this is Vortex, over?”

Where was the rest of his twelve-man team? They’d been right behind him, and the captain had been holding up in that doorway, which was now empty.

Vatz bolted to his feet, darted back behind the still-burning hulk of a Mercedes SUV, and suddenly raised his pistol, about to fire—

When he realized the men down the alley were friendlies, his team, easy to mistake because of their Russian Spetsnaz uniforms.

Weapons Sergeant Zack Murrow had already shouldered the Javelin antitank missile they had recovered from one of the dead infantrymen and was moving toward the street, about to lie prone and get a bead on that tank.

Vatz rushed toward Zack; never breaking cover, he said in perfect Russian, “Don’t miss.”

The sergeant answered in English. “Right. But forget the Russian, Nathan. Our cover’s been seriously blown.”

Vatz and his colleagues were Joint Strike Force soldiers wearing enemy uniforms. They would be considered spies. They would not be taken prisoner. There would be no diplomatic negotiation for their release.

Hurrying farther along the wall, Vatz found the detachment commander, Captain Tom Gerard, and the assistant detachment commander, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Douglas Barnes, speaking softly, Gerard working an index finger over his pocket PC. Next to them were the team’s two commo guys, and farther back were the two engineers and assistant weapons sergeant, Russian Varjag heavy pistols drawn as they covered the end of the alley. One of the two medics was positioned at the near side.

Tom Clancy's EndWar #1 3.8 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 76 reviews.

David Michael's novel EndWar, created by Tom Clancy, is about a future world engulfed in the flames of World War III. In the story, the global balance of power is altered by two major events: one, the independent European states in the European Union become a unified country known as the European Federation, and Saudi Arabia and Iran attack each other with a nuclear assault that destroys the Middle East's oil supply, resulting in Russia becoming the worlds leading oil supplier, and in turn a rich military power. Seeking complete global dominance, an imperialist Russia begins a war with the U.S. and European Federation. During the early stages of the war, where the story begins, a U.S. Special Forces team is sent behind enemy lines in Moscow to kidnap a Russian officer who can tell the American's about a new mysterious invasion that Russia is known to be planning. The Americans and Europeans are then thrown in to a race against time to uncover the secrets of Operation 2659 before it is too late. I found the book personally to be exciting and suspenseful. The imagery was sufficient and the book easily pulls you into the futuristic and brutal battlefields of World War III. Even if you have no knowledge of military weaponry the book cradles you with concise descriptions of the vehicles, aircraft, and missiles that may trip you up if you can't picture them. The downside to the novel was that the literary aspects of it like vocabulary, dialogue, and characters were all so elementary and basic to the point of almost being unprofessional. Despite this, the book makes for a very entertaining, 400 page non-stop thrill ride.

It felt like I was embedded with the men and women fighting World War Three. Clancy made the characters and the war that they were engaged in seem very real. The action was so well depicted and moved so fast that I read this book in little over a day. Yes,I do have a life, but it was raining and it was on a weekend, so give me a break. This book starts out with a chilling quote from Albert Einstein which set the theme for the whole story: "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." From the European Theater to the frozen lands of the Northwest Territory in Canada, you are there with the warriors as they fight for their very existence. Warriors in their own right such as Major Stepanie Halverson, pilot of F-35B Joint Strike Fighter, who happened to be on a training mission at the wrong time or maybe the right time. Their is also Commander Andreas of the USS Forida, SSN-805, a Virginia-class nuclear submarine whose character is tested when communication satilites are destroyed and he doesn't know what is happening. There are of course many Marine, Special forces and other warriors to numerous to mention for you to fight along side. Keep some bandages on hand to treat your wounds.

This book is one of, if not the best book i've ever read to this day. It's action packed with a variety of characters from a Marine Force Recon sergeant to a Army Special Forces sergeant to the president of the United States all the way to a colonel of the Russian Federation and the president of the Russian Federation and many more. The book sets you in the year of 2020 and the world is on the break of World War 3 and the two major oil reserves of the world (saudi arabia and iran) destroy each other in a nuclear exchange and no the world relies on Russia, Canada, and a few other small reserves around the world. So through Russian growing greatly in economic strength, it forms the Russian Federation which build its' military strength to expand mother Russia. Since Nuclear war isn't an option anymore because the worlds superpowers have sent up satilite/laser weapons to shoot any nuke out of the sky the Worlds super powers are forced to use conventional warfare. Through the caos American forces form the Joint Strike Force and a majority of the European countries (excluding the UK and other neutral countries) form the European Federation or Enforcers Corps, lastly Russia with its new military might forms the Russian federation. The book instantly starts of with action when Sergeant Nathan Vatz and his Army Special forces team is in moscow with the objective of ensuring the capture of a Colonel Pavel Doletskaya to figure out the ultimate question; what is operation 2659 and who is Snegurochka? Shortly after the capture and interrogation of Colonel Doletskaya, Russia invades Canada with their eye on the Oil reserves of Canada. While this is going on Russia is still invading Western Europe frighting the JSF and Euros. Though the Prime Minister of Canada refuse to take military action towards the Russians, the JSF is forced to leap into action to pretect the oil reserves from the Russian since they are their main source of oil. Thoughout the Russian invasion a number of major events happen through the rescue mission of a fighter pilot to holding off the russians in a couple of key cities and towns in canada in order to keep the oil reserves out of Russian hands. I'm afraid thats all i can tell you about the book without giving away the best parts of the book. This is deffinately the first of a series of End War books and i look forward to reading the sequels.

End War was an excellent book. It had over sixty different characters all with their own personalities. The plot is that the Russians try too invade the United States. They invade Canada and fight their way too Alberta and the Northwest Territory. They capture the Russian Colonel and interrogate him through the entire book. So if you are interested in wars or battles you need to read this book and you will be impressed.

Overall I thought the book was a fun read with an interesting setting with a futuristically savvy take on World War Three. But that said I also thought it was terribly cliche. The dialogue is grossly over the top and expected, along with characters. Some I found interesting, but most of them served as nothing more than stereotypes of military positions. The story was fairly good simply due to the setting, which is one of the most original ones of a future world war that I found highly interesting. However, the abundance of terrible cliches throughout make it out to be a simple read thats only slightly rewarding to finish.

This book is a complete disappointment. The plot is ridiculous and the writing is poor. If you have the mental capacity to navigate to this website and read a review, you will be utterly disappointed.
