KLIATT
As the series title attests, these books want to be hip. They're handsome to look at (with a full page b/w photo on each front cover) and a nice size to hold. If you want a series on pop musicians in your collection, these have some virtues. They're well written, have a workable index, and include a small collection of good pictures. I don't quite get the organization, though. Each has: one, the story; two, the music; and three, the legacy. Nice in theory, but in practice the story is too long and undifferentiated by segment, the music is just a list of works with quick annotations, and the legacy section more or less repeats material from section one. The books are billed as a series of "opinionated biographies." The writers appear to care a great deal about their subjects, though the writing has that breathless quality of much rock criticism.
