Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In this 128-page anthology of 37 Bible stories and prayers, dePaola wisely works from the New International Version, the contemporary translation of the Bible, to make these tales accessible to young readers. Jonah in the whale, Noah and his animal pairs headed for the ark, Moses with the burning bush: all are presented in an appealing style, with well-integrated details that enrich the telling. Those who already love dePaola and his trademark characters will be predisposed to appreciate this comprehensive collection. All ages. (Sept.)
Children's Literature
This book of Bible stories contains 36 tales from the Old and New Testaments. The text is taken from the New International translation. The text contains no chapter or verse references, but these are listed in the back of the book. In an effort to make the stories flow more smoothly, the text has been edited. Some stories are pieced together using several different books of the Bible, while other stories are missing only a verse or two. The illustrations are what one expects from a Tomie dePaola book, with bright colors and a distinctive, comforting style of illustration. This Bible storybook is most appropriate for older preschoolers. There is too much text and not enough pictures for toddlers, and school aged children might find this book too juvenile. 2002, Puffin Books/Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers, Ages 3 to 6.

School Library Journal
K Up-- A collection of 17 stories from the Old Testament, 15 from the New Testament, and 4 psalms. The text is from the New International Version, which is currently among the best-selling editions of the Bible and is written in clear, straightforward language. dePaola uses the text as written with some abridgement to make the stories an appropriate length. Done in his typical style, the illustrations feature stylized people and objects. His children are as winsome looking as ever, but the adults convey sincerity and trust through both facial expressions and body positions. He also makes good use of architectural and decorative detail. There are several illustrations for each story, many of which are full page, and most make dramatic use of color. The large format enhances the impact of the pictures. Like Mother Goose and fairy-tale collections, editions of Bible stories by respected illustrators abound, but this edition should find a place on most shelves as an excellent choice for family or group use as well as for independent reading. --Jane Gardner Connor, formerly at South Carolina State Library, Columbia

Meet the Author

Tomie dePaola

Tomie dePaola is the acclaimed author and/or illustrator of more than 200 books for children.

Biography

Born in 1934 into a large extended Irish/Italian family, Tomie dePaola received his art education at Brooklyn's Pratt Institute and the California College of Arts & Crafts. Although he always wanted to create children's books, he spent several years applying his talents to the fields of education, theater, and graphic design. In the mid-1960s, he received his first commission to illustrate a children's science book. A year later, he published his first original picture book, The Wonderful Dragon of Timlin. Today, he is one of the most prolific -- and beloved -- author/illustrators in children's literature.

In addition to illustrating stories by other writers, DePaola has created artwork for collections of poetry, nursery rhymes, holiday traditions, and folk and religious tales. But, he is most famous for books of his own creation, especially Strega Nona ("Grandma Witch"), the beloved story of an old woman who uses her magical powers to help the people of her small Italian village. Written in 1975, this Caldecott Honor winner is still delighting children today.

DePaola admits that there are strong autobiographical elements in many of his books (Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs, The Art Lesson, Stagestruck), but nowhere is this more evident than in 26 Fairmount Avenue, a series of charming chapter books based on his Connecticut childhood. Taking its name from the address of his family home, the series captures the experiences and emotions of a young boy growing up in the late 1930s and early '40s in the shadow of World War II. The first book in the series received a 1999 Newbery Honor Award.

DePaola and his work have been recognized with many honors, including the Smithsonian Medal, the Kerlan Award for "singular attainment in children's literature," the Catholic Library Association's Regina Medal, and several awards from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. In 1999, the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts bestowed on dePaola the Lotte Jacobi Living Treasure Award for the body of his work.

      Disappointed

I purchased this book for my preschooler since it was advertised in the preschool section of scholastic book club. I thought it would be a nice picture book with with age appropriate stories. Unfortuneatley it was very wordy and difficult for my daughter to comprehend. There were not many pictures to correspond with the bible stories. I was extremely disappointed. I would not buy this book if I were you.

This is a wonderful book for children who are ages 5-12. (It is not inteded to be a book for toddlers to flip through on their own.) Non-readers can enjoy listening to a parent read to them and competent readers can enjoy reading on their own. The text is written in a story format and the illustrations are engaging. I am a 4h grade teacher at a Catholic elementary school and my students really it when we read from this book.
