All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
The full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy that launched the band to international superstardom, written almost entirely by Pete Townshend. Hailed as a breakthrough upon its release, its critical standing has diminished somewhat in the ensuing decades because of the occasional pretensions of the concept and because of the insubstantial nature of some of the songs that functioned as little more than devices to advance the rather sketchy plot. Nonetheless, the double album has many excellent songs, including "I'm Free," "Pinball Wizard," "Sensation," "Christmas," "We're Not Gonna Take It," and the dramatic ten-minute instrumental "Underture." Though the album was slightly flawed, Townshend's ability to construct a lengthy conceptual narrative brought new possibilities to rock music. Despite the complexity of the project, he and the Who never lost sight of solid pop melodies, harmonies, and forceful instrumentation, imbuing the material with a suitably powerful grace.

Taking Rock to a new level

This is a brilliant album, though admittedly sounding a bit dated, but this album took Rock to a new level of possibilities and the influence of this album to the future of Rock was profound. An essential album in rock history.

    Wow...

I remember the very first time I heard this album--I was on the road with my dad, and I told him how much I liked the song "Pinball Wizard". He replied to me,"Have you heard the entire album from which it came from?" I told him, "No." He quickly popped it in, and I was simply blown away! This is an amazing Who album and i highly recommened it for people who like being told stories through music. It's awesome!

    somewhat overrated

Overrated, but still excellent. Not my favorite Who record but still better than anything by just about any other band.

How do you think they do it?

this album is incredible. having been in the actual production of the musical "Tommy" i think i understand the need for what some call "filler". songs like "do you think it's alright", "fiddle about", "cousin kevin", and "tommy's holiday camp" all help to drive the complex plot...although it is sketchy to those unfamiliar with the who's occasional oddities. become familiar with bands like the who, led zepp, the stones, and yes...they're not goin' anywhere anytime soon.

    just simply perfect

This by far one of the greatest rock albulms ever. The lyrics and styles of playing, ecspecially in "overture", are amazing. Even thought a few songs are long winded and very strange it is purely perfect. Tommy is good from the beggining to end. The last song, "Were not Gonna Take It" really defines the late sixties era. If anyone like me saw the movie first the albulm is so much better. Pete Townshenzds guitaring is great.

    ''Tommy'' is a classic!

Tommy is a great album because the lyrics and music are very powerful. No visual images are needed. I enjoyed it more than the movie soundrack with Elton John, Tina Turner, and others because the vocals were more restrained. You can't go wrong with this double album on a single compact disk.

    A great set of songs.......

This is one of my favorite Who albums, and the one that first introduced me to the group. All the songs are good, and many of them are great. ''Tommy'' is highly recommended.

    An essential rock recording

This concept album is The Who's adolescent angst personified. As such it has remained an important part of my own youth, along with the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper and Led Zeppelin's IV. This is even considering that I'm 21 years old and wasn't around at the time that Tommy was first released. It's universal appeal is widened by the fact that Townshend was writing undeniably catchy pop songs for it - 'Amazing Journey', 'Christmas', 'The Acid Queen', 'Pinball Wizard', 'Go To The Mirror', 'Sensation' - all great tunes, played to precision by one of rock's most accomplished bands. The only reason I can't give it the full five stars is that there is a considerable amount of filler on the record too - who needs 'Do You Think It's Alright' or 'Tommy's Holiday Camp' anyway? But the overall quality of this album is enough that I'd recommend it to anyone.
