Overview

Tommy's Sunset is a translation of the acclaimed Japanese novel about the journey of a mother and her autistic child. Drawing from her own personal life story, Hisako Tsurushima has provided a definitive work about the problems and surprising joys for the autistic and those who love them. Readers experience a range of emotions as Tommy and his mother are routinely embarrassed in social situations and share delight in private moments. As she lovingly describes these characters, Tsurushima ultimately investigates the source of our social responses to people who are in any way different from ourselves. Tommy's Sunset is a deceptively simple novel that will leave readers with a lasting impression and a new outlook on what it means to be different.

Editorial Reviews

Setouchi Jyakuchoh
This is a story involving much cheerfulness and pathos.
Yoji Yamada
The charm of Tommy's Sunset resides in its light touch and its humor. No doubt this is in the author's character. One must live positively. Turning back solves nothing. It was with this attitude and strong will working in the background that Tsurushima Hisako was able to write such a work.
