In fact, everyone's brought something different, but there isn't a speck of food in sight. And worse, everyone is extremely hungry. Maybe Toni's instructions weren't quite clear enough....

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Some picture books are simple fun. However, Laura Ljungkvist's latest literary creation is more like a laugh-filled activity kit. On the surface, the plot seems simple. No one can hear Toni's telephone conversation. She is misunderstood by everyone, resulting in comical consequences. But in this book, there's more than meets the eye--and ear. Teachers, story-hour presenters, and parents: be warned. Only the most patient grown-ups should attempt Toni's Topsy-Turvy Telephone Day as a read-aloud. That's because Ljungkvist's illustrations have taken up the classic challenge of every kid artist. How do you draw that five-pointed star without lifting your pencil from the page? Can you sign your whole name without leaving the paper? What else can be accomplished in one fluid graphite motion? Each one of Ljungkvist's illustrations is addictive. The nonstop curly telephone cord twists and turns into a character face. The line continues, creating a phone, and leaps the page. From page to page, one continual line connects the entire visual story, scene to scene. Young listeners will keep fingers aloft for every page, tracing the progression of the unending line. As a bonus story, Ljungkvist reveals in an "Artist's Note" postscript how she created her innovative look. "I sketch with a fine marker on drafting paper. By sketching on different pieces of this translucent paper and cutting and pasting them on top of each other, I can alter each image without creating an entirely new sketch. When I am happy with my sketches, I use a lightbox and a pencil to transfer them to watercolor paper. Then it's time to paint!" Ljungkvist told, too, of her gouache plot. She mixed a special color for eachcharacter. Just like a movie character with individual theme music, Toni and each of her friends sport a different hue. Sharing Toni's tale may also result in colorful echoes from giggling listeners. Just like the classic game of "telephone," Toni's messages get diluted and distorted with each subsequent attempt. Did she ask a friend to bring "hats and balloons," or "cats and baboons?" Repeating each muddled message will be the mission of most young readers. This is Ljungkvist's first picture book. Based on the playful originality and vivid designs on every page, it's safe to say that Toni's Topsy-Turvy Telephone Day won't be this creator's last. 2001, Harry N. Abrams, $15.95. Ages 3 to 6. Gr 1-3-A stylish cautionary tale on the hazards of noise pollution. Planning a potluck dinner, Toni calls all of her friends, telling Ruth to bring punch and lemonade, Frank to bring bread and cheese, and so on. Unfortunately, as Ruth lives next to an airport, and Frank loves loud music, they misinterpret her request and arrive with, respectively, a poodle and a maid, a bride and a niece. In fact, everyone turns up with extra mouths to feed, and nothing with which to feed them. What's a frantic hostess to do? In a flash of inspiration, Toni calls for a humongous pizza-and though "extra cheese" somehow becomes "eggs and bees," there's still plenty for all. Across simple geometric shapes placed over plain-colored backgrounds, Ljungkvist draws telephones and facial features with a single, fluent line that runs from title page to final scene. That line creates sturdy links between the pictures despite frequent, radical color shifts, and adds to the art's tumbling, vibrant energy. This fresh variant on the "telephone" game will have younger readers and listeners in stitches.-John Peters, New York Public Library Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    A great childrens book!

As much as our child loves us reading the story of Tonis's potluck dinner gone wrong for her, she love to trace her finger along the oneline illustrations. The illustrations and colors are some wonderful it could almost be a coffee table book. A strongly recommended read for your children 3-8 years old.

    Colorful Illustrations that flow together

Wonderful bright colors, and fun to read rhymes for children under 10. Toni decides to have a potluck dinner party and calls each of her friends to bring an item, but because of the background noise, they each bring the wrong thing!
