Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
This sturdy board book is part of the “Tonka” series and is licensed by Hasbro. The monster truck on the front cover has tactile tires. Little fingers can explore the raised ridges of the huge tires. Each of the double spreads includes the specialized trucks that would be utilized in specific situations. The opening spread depicts several “rescue vehicles” and shows firefighters doing their job to quell a fire. A farm scene is next, showing several kinds of tractors, a pick-up truck, and a forklift. City dwellers will appreciate the street cleaner, tow truck, cement mixer, and garbage trucks. Another scene shows how many trucks can be seen when traveling on the open highways. Tanker trucks, automobile carriers, tractor-trailers, etc. are part of most youngsters’ view while riding in their car seats. The last spread features trucks at a construction site and includes a dump truck, a bulldozer, a ditcher, and a moveable derrick. Details give a sense of reality—all of the workers are wearing hard hats. The text is limited but will satisfy little listeners who are really just fascinated by trucks of all sorts. Adults can extend the value of this title by pointing to and naming each vehicle, exploiting opportunities for counting, and naming colors. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan; Ages 8 mo. to 3.
