Welcome to the world of trucks. Trucks and the people who operate them perform many tasks. At night, workers deliver newspapers and groceries. On the farm, a tanker collects the milk and at the ski resort, big snowcats and snowplows do their jobs. One of the spreads that is bound to elicit discussion features a house being moved. While the Tonka brand name is prominent on each truck, and the books is like a sales catalog without prices, it will appeal to any kid who is fascinated by big vehicles. 2000, Scholastic, Ages 2 to 6, $12.50. PreS-Gr 2-A sure winner for all young truck aficionados, this title has the same format as the Tonka Big Book of Trucks (Scholastic, 1996). Each chapter presents a milieu or scene on a double-page spread, followed by a second spread that features the vehicles involved. For example, "On the Farm" introduces some of the work that farmers do and then depicts and describes a manure spreader, a cattle transport, a seed drill, and a milk tanker. Other chapters look at "Night Workers," "Moving Day," "Airport Trucks," etc. Watercolor illustrations aptly represent the vehicles, all with the Tonka brand name prominently displayed, and a multicultural group of workers, men and women, operating them.-Maryann H.
