Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com - Kevin Girard
I've read a lot of photography websites, blogs, "how-to's" and books, and this is one of the best out there. The book builds up from basic concepts to fairly complex shooting techniques, and will satisfy both the beginner and the advanced shooter alike. Each chapter contains a "practice" section, which has practical exercises to help you master the concepts. The book reads very easily, as the author's style is both personal and straightforward. Equally, the book serves as an encyclopedia of ...

I really loved this book. I've been familiar with Tony's work for several years through his windows books and was looking forward to this one because I know how smart he is. I was a bit worried that given his technical background the book might be unapproachable and was very pleased to have been wrong about that. In this book Tony not only breaks down digital photography from a technical viewpoint but he also gives lots of great advice which would apply regardless of the type of camera. ...

I absolutely love everything about this guide! I own other photography publications (some, even issued to me when I studied photography in college) and they are not nearly as concise, up-to-date and informative as this one is. The first few chapters alone make will give you a much better idea of photo composition, technique and method than some books cover in their entirety. Very neatly organized, and packed with helpful information, this book is simply a must have!

I've been a photographer for years and have many photography books, but this is by far my favorite. The author is concise, thorough, and easy to understand. He uses pictures, videos, diagrams, and even an advice/critique forum on his Facebook (Tony Northrup Photography) to make sure the lesson really sinks in.
The book also includes free updates (I've gotten one already) so that you never have to buy the next edition. I'm really impressed by the quality and commitment of this author and book. Great job, Tony!

This is the best book for learning photography. It's taking me a while to read it because I keep stopping to practice my photography. I've learned so much! the other books I read never inspired me, but the pictures are (mostly) amazing and the language is easy to understand. It's very practical. If you want to take better pictures, this is the book for you.

    Perfect for beginners

I really am enjoying the video feature to this book. It makes some of the marterial easier to understand when he shows you examples. Although I have not completed this book as I am going through slowly like a text book I am learning a ton and enjoying my camera more with each chapter.

    Excellent Book

Northrup's book smartly integrates online content that can be accessed directly from the e-book. The writing style has just enough info without being verbose. I feel very prepared to take decent photos after reading it.
