Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This series of short, basic sports biographies features four current stars of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), with many photos, quotes, and fun facts about the sport. Each book is written in a simple, breezy style aimed at the sports fan. Basic background information on each driver includes family, hobbies, and explanations of how the driver got started in auto racing. Short chapters are interspersed liberally with black-and-white photographs, although some seem more filler than content. For example, a photograph of Jeff Gordon dropping out of a 1996 race is not explained in the text. There is more information here than readers might find in a typical racing magazine, including critiques and rivalries. Earnhardt's aggressive driving and his rivalry with young superstar Gordon are detailed, as is the crowd's routine "booing" of Gordon at races because he is not from the South. Incidents, such as Stewart's repeated ramming of another car in frustration over losing a race, are detailed and then explained in quotes by the driver. In the books on both Gordon and Jarrett, there is a strong focus on faith and religious belief in racing, and Earnhardt's devotion to his father's memory is a recurrent theme of his biography. The books are very up to date, with predictions for the 2001 season included. Covers feature a color photograph of each driver, and the large print on small pages makes them seem less intimidating than most sport magazines. These slim attractive volumes will fit equally well with sports biographies or on a paperback rack. Appendixes in each include racing statistics, facts about each driver's "ride" (a.k.a. his car), and career highlights. Buywhere NASCAR is popular. Photos. Appendix.
