Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
It is a counting book—from one to ten—but the theme is Halloween. The young lad in this story finds one monster hiding under his bed; the next one appears in a drawer. The bedroom is the setting as one monster comes in through the door; others are lurking behind the bed, under the lamp, and just about any place you can imagine. They have tentacles, multiple eyes, and fierce expressions on their faces. The number appears at the bottom left hand corner and it is repetitive—"8 [or whatever number] are in my room." The humor is there for those who look closely at the picture of a basketball player who is reacting to all the craziness. In the end, our young fellow puts on a monster costume to become number ten as they all head out to go trick-or-treating! It is illogical, but young ones will have fun counting and looking at all of the outlandish monsters and learning a variety of words such as yikes, eek, zoinks, oof and other useful expressions.
